Is there a most effective way to copy data to and from a remote server. I use PC anywhere now. I have used Remote Admin, I think. Should I look into FTP?
And now I have my network drives mapped on my remote server ( through remote desktop), is it fast to just copy from drive to drive in Windows Explorer?

I go from my desktop to the remote server with my Comcast broadband account Then the leased server has it's own internet access.
I did a Speakeasy Speed test on my Comcast account local desktop:
download 5353 kbps
Upload 1117 kpbs-
that's running slowly today I think, as I'm coping data right now
On the server I did another test:
Dowload 8141 kbps
Upload 6628 kbps
I copy files ranging from a few megabytes to 3 or 4 gigs.
Copying data through remote desktop or the Windows file sharing service (a.k.a. Server Message Block or SMB) is about the slowest method for transferring files. On top of that, there's no way to continue from a partial transfer if your connection gets interrupted.
FTP is considerably faster than SMB (in my experience, between 5-7x faster). However, with FTP, all your traffic is sent in the clear and can be read if intercepted. If you want a secure solution, try SFTP. You'll get a slight performance hit for the encryption, but even then, it's faster than SMB. With smart FTP/SFTP clients, you can also continue a file transfer midway if it gets interrupted.
Lastly, if you have a need to continually transfer files between two systems, I would suggest looking into rsync for Windows.
thanks guys, I'm downloading rsyn as we speak. But I do like my pcanywhere. Where does it fall in there or does it use the SMB? I do like the idea of partial file recovery. I don't need to keep the directories in sync though. I just send files back and forth. Encrytion is not much of an issue as these are studio musical files.
I believe PCAnywhere uses its own transfer protocol, but FTP is about as lean as you can go in terms of protocol overhead. The protocol overhead is really what slows down the transfers (i.e., SMB has a lot of protocol overhead.)
Also, with respect to encryption, it's not just the traffic that is sent in the clear. Any login credentials that you might use (e.g., passwords) to connect to the remote system are also sent in the clear with FTP (and the same goes for rsync as well).

what bandwidth do you have between yourself and the remote server and what size are these files you require to copy.
