The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Can't map a network file share.

Tags: Microsoft, Windows, XP & Server 2003
I am trying to setup a mapped network drive.  The file server is running Windows Server 2003 R2, and the PCs are running Windows XP SP2.  None of them are on a domain.  After entering the I.P. address and share name (i.e. \\198.262.68.25\share$) and then enter in the user credentials, it keeps asking for the username and password.  It does, however, add the servername to the front of the passowrd when it asks for the user credentials again.  My coworker ran Ethereal while we were trying to map it so that we could see the traffic, and after the PC send the request to connect to the share, the server responds with Error: status_no_such_device.  I know the share exists.  I don't have this problem when I map the share to my new laptop running Vista or to another server on the LAN that is also running Server 2003.  Also, when I try to use the NET USE command to connect to the share, it feeds back an error saying, "Logon Failure: unknown user name or bad password."  But the username I'm using is the server's administrator account, since it isn't on a domain.

What is causing this?  Is this a security setting that is causing this?  Or is this a network issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm on a time crunch to get this up and running.
