Question

Make a File Share prompt for a username and password

Asked by: CaseForensics

Is there a way to force a password prompt when the the user does not have access to a  share?  Currently It just pops up an error message saying "Location is not available" "Access is denied."

The weird thing is that if the user is not apart of the domain, they will get this prompt.  I understand the logic, but want users to have the capability of a non user.  Is this possible?

Thanks!

Hey Mike,

Thanks.  I read through these posts.  It's not that I want to disable cached logon credentials.  Users will then have to provide a username and password to all shares.  There are certain folders within the share that all users don't have access to.  I want to be able to sit down at their machine, and when I try to open on of these folders they cannot access, I want it to prompt me for a username and password.  Make sense?  Any further ideas?

You can share it via FTP .... this way it will only allow you to access the share with a username and password.

Thats creative.  I'm not too familar with Windows FTP server management.  Can i manage FTP access to any folder currently in a share?

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-11-06 at 17:08:00ID: 25764464

Yes... it's very easy .... you might want to use a standalone FTP software if you are not familiar with the Windows FTP....... CuteFTP, Bullet Proof FTP...... both are good and easy to learn fast and configure properly...

Hello CaseForensics,

Did you try to set HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\CachedLogonsCount to 0 ?

Thanks for the ideas!  I went out and bought a 16GB flash drive to load on any programs that I need access to.  I may in the future setup an FTP.  Too many things going right now to tinker with new things.

Thanks Everyone!
