Question

Roaming Profiles, Folder redirection, and usrclass.dat

Asked by: sgbotsford

Roaming profile problems.

1.  If I check the value of UserShellFolders all of the entries refer to \\conan\{username}\Conf\{Foldername}, where username is sbotsford and foldername is, for example, Application Data.

Despite this, the various profile folders are copied from the server to the client.

Part 1: What am I doing wrong in setting up my roaming profiles?

Folder redirection is implemented using the adm template from zenworks.

http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/tools/14387.html

2.  Despite telling each client to not cache roaming profiles, they are not deleted on logout.
Worse, if the user logs out and I log in as administrator, I can't delete them either until I reboot the client comptuer.  If I go into Documents and Settings, it all comes down to a pair of files usrclass.dat and usrclass.dat.log.

I've installed UPHClean from microsoft.  No log events other than the service starting and stopping show up, and the problem persists.

System environment.
Servers Samba 2.2.8a running on Freebsd.
Clients Win2k Pro, SP4
Samba server acts as PDC login server.
No active domain.

Hi sgbotsford

1. Unfortunately this isn't true redirection, i.e. not the same as the Microsoft Redirection Group Policy, the method used in the ADM is basically a registry hack.  All it does is change the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders to the new location.  The Microsoft method which is only available in Active Directory handles this completely differently.  By removing the folder altogeather and making the files/folders Offline folders, to stop this you can use the Group Policy to stop making Redirected Folders automatically cached.  But I'm afraid it won't help in your case.

2. usrclass.dat refers to the HKCU\Software\Classes key, it sounds like something is referencing this which is causing these files to remain locked.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

My understanding was that ALL policy objects are registry hacks.  E.g.  They apply a set of changes to either the computer or user registry hive.

Question:  Does it make sense to have folder redirection and local profiles?

Hi sgbotsford

"My understanding was that ALL policy objects are registry hacks.  "
That is correct however Microsoft handles Folder Redirection completely different, but unfortunately you can only see these Folder Redirection settings under Group Policy Management Console on an Active Directory Domain.  We use Folder Redirection for My Documents for e.g. however their is no My Documents Folder in our local profile, rather the My Documents folder is made an Offline Folder so its contents are held under C:\Windows\CSC.  If we lose connection to the Server all files created Offline and Saved to My Documents is saved into the C:\Windows\CSC directory and than synchronised once reconnected to the network.

Question:  Does it make sense to have folder redirection and local profiles?
For My Documents, Desktop, Favorites, or if you wish to point all users to the same directory yes it does make sense, this ensures that important files/folders are being backed up on the server.  I highly recommend the My Documents Folder and than not including this in your Roaming Profile that way it does try and copy this folder up and down to the server each time you logon and logoff your system.

Hope that made sense.

Cheers

MS says otherwise:
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/7ce6972c-33ec-499f-ac23-a913a63305771033.mspx?mfr=true

Quoting from that article.

Folder Redirection   You can redirect special folders to alternate locations, either to a local or network location by modifying the values of the registry entries in the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

And the thing is, it works.  The network directories are being used.  BUT there is still a partial profile created in Docs & Sets.

Hi sgbotsford

That is correct but what I was saying is that it's applied differently when using Active Directory, meaning, that the redirected folders are not created within the profile.  Which from your post I'm assuming you want to do, without AD I do not know of or heard of any other way to apply the same behaviour in a Non Active Directory Environment.  We were also using Novell prior to Migrating to Microsoft and came across the same issue.  We were able to redirect the User Shell Folders using Zenworks Registry Tools, we only redirected the My Documents Folder, overall this was ok because no files were being saved locally, it's more of cosmetic thing rather than anything else.

Cheers

What I'm trying to do is to disable all copying from the server to a local directory; disable the creation of a local profile directory, and have the OS tidy up after the user logs out deleting any temporary files, which I would prefer be created at a spot of my chosing

Hi Venabili

I believe I answered the post regarding the roaming profile, i.e. that the method sgbotsford was trying to use via Registry Changes does not work the same as in a Microsoft Environment which handles roaming profiles completely differently.

Cheers

Reading the question - the Asker does not seem to think so? :(

by: matrixnzPosted on 2007-06-08 at 05:03:42ID: 19241156

Hi Venabili

I understand the asker may not like the answer, although the answer is still correct.  Roaming Profiles are handled differently in Active Directory, the Novell fix mentioned in his post changes the User Shell Folders however these are held in the ntuser.dat hive.  So these settings are read at time of the profile login, so this has to be available first before a user can logon, which means it needs to create a local profile first. i.e. C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\ once the ntuser.dat is read to determine the Shell Folders locations it will than redirect them to that particular folder.  But the folders will still be created locally even if they aren't being used.

It sounds very much like the asker would like to use mandatory profiles which would resolve this issue, however again this is only available in Active Directory.  Another option would be too purchase a third party product that will allow you to do the same thing, although these can be hit and miss and usually aren't meant for large corporations.

Cheers
