The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Sorry, no.  SBS MUST be a Domain Controller and it MUST be your FSMO Master Domain Controller (my understandnig is that Samba does not yet (may never?) support Active Directory, so it can't even be a DC in the SBS domain.  There is no legal work around to this and we cannot help you violate license agreements to find one.

Sir, I do not want the Active directory support , i require only the VB to run on the windows 2003 sbs server and iam only looking windows 2003 sbs to work as a member server , please tell me is this possible.

As leew states, SBS server must be the FSMO Master Domain Controller. There is no 'workaround' to this. However, the Samba server could be setup to use LDAP to allow users from the Windows AD domain environment to access the Samba server for file sharing storage needs.

NOTE: I haven't tried this so I don't know if it is even possible.

Anonymous LDAP operations to Active Directory are disabled on Windows Server 2003 domain controllers

Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 cannot act as a member server or client to the network infrastructure you are proposing.

So we can get a better understanding, what is it you're trying to do? Maybe we can come up with a better solution.

SBS was not designed as an application/terminal server in this sense and reserves most of its processes for background services (i.e. IIS, Exchange, RWW, OWA, etc). SBS cannot run the Visual Studio bundle in application mode for users. In fact, it's _not_ even a supported platform.

I recommend Windows Server 2003 as the solution for your needs. Windows Server 2003 can run as a stand alone server, thus not be part of the Samba domain in a sense. Windows Server 2003 can be used to install the Visual Studio application as well as it _is_ considered a supported platform.

If multiple people need access to the Visual Studio application environment, you can also setup Windows Server 2003 as a terminal server (if TS CALs are purchased) in application server mode, thus allowing you can install the Visual Studio bundle on it, allow users to connect to personal sessions and run the VB program instance.

In different words that restate what I said earlier and what others have said, NO.  There is no legal way of making the SBS server a member server or a non-FSMO master DC.  And we cannot help you violate the license agreement.

SBS CANNOT do this.  There are mechanisms in place to restart the server frequently if you violate these licensing terms.

If you have a requirement for a windows server and you do not want to make it your DC, I would suggest you get a STANDARD copy of Windows server and NOT SBS.

This question is going back and forth. You have another open question stating the same thing here:

I did some research on this, however since its been several years since I have even touched a Windows NT environment, I can only provide the links I found concerning Samba and NT:
