The Solution Rating System
|
|
| With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating. - The Grade of the Solution
- The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
- The Number of Author and Expert Comments
- The Number of Experts Contributing
- The Feedback of the Community
Your Input Matters Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site. If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support. Thank you! |

Asked by eric1508 in Samba File Server, Linux Administration, Ubuntu
The basics of the situation are this... I setup a simple Samba Server running off of Ubuntu Server 7.10 for a real estate client of mine. They are just using it as a simple file server mapped to their PC's and allowing their Xerox machine to scan to it. It's worked great for a few weeks now but I just logged into it remotely and noticed some weird things. For one I am getting a message when I use the ls command. The message says something like... ls: unrecognized prefix: do and then something about LS_COLORS environment. I found that I can use unset LS_COLORS to temporarily fix this but it's not really the issue. I then noticed a new file in the home directory called office. I never created this file so I was suspicious. So I opened it and saw one file inside called z. I opened this in vi and saw a bunch of jibber jabber and then thing like... cleaning utmp file finished and other things about cleaning tmp files and log files. Then I googled this z file and saw it referring to being rooted and things like Samba scanners etc...
So it looks pretty sketchy. I have an image of the drive soon after I finished installing the server software and this would hopefully get it to a state before this occurred. Assuming this is true what kinds of things do I need to do (other than changing passwords and such) to prevent this from happening in the future. I know this is a HUGE question and their are many options but I am just looking for some general help in this area. My experience is strong in general computing but I am somewhat new to Linux and Samba. Thanks in advance for your help, Eric.
