Windows XP - Log in without connection, using cached passwords - not working with SAMBA

I have a SAMBA domain on a Linux server in my network. On network, it works fine, but off-network I can't login. The error is "Windows can not log you on because the domain DOMAIN is not available"

Over a pre-login VPN connection, it works fine. However I have a slow upload and a roaming profile, and would rather not wait a half an hour to log in.

This replaced a W2K domain, which worked fine in this regard.

p.s. "Number of previous logins to cache" is at 10 in gpedit.msc
