Question

TeraStation Pro - Firmware and access Issues - Buffalo no help!!

Asked by: soupy28

My Terastation Pro has been working like a charm for about 8 months. Without having changed anything, this morning it did not register as a network drive and was not accessible via browser management. There is no obvious disk failure (all disk LEDs are green). The Terastation boots normally. The LCD does not show the firmware version but displays something like =========. I can ping the Terastation and it responds. The client utility shows me that the name of the station has been set back to TS-TGL-EM from the name I had given it. The client utility further shows me that the Terastation is not part of a workgroup (it was until yesterday) and has no firmware (it shows ----- where usually the firmware version is displayed). I can not access the Terastation via webbrowser. As the thing was packed with data ( approx 1.4 Gig) I would very much appreciate any advise on how I can access the unit. I have contacted Buffalo, and like all other vendors, they were of no help at all. I have a second Terastation and my idea was to simply put all 4 drives from the one into the other to at least have the possibility to backup the data to a file server. Will that work or am I going to ruin my second Terastation as well? Need HELP on this ASAP. Thanks so much, Soupy

I would escalate at Buffalo until this is resolved.

Is it still under  warranty ?

Yes, you might be able to swap out the drives, since  would hope that the firmware is embedded in the hardware and not the drives.

I would also wait for someone with more terstation experience.

I hope this helps !

Also recheck the install manual and see if there is any kind of way to do a manual reset of the built in firmware.

I called in a Linux expert and he was able to restore the firmware on both devices. Of course what he did will remain a big secret as he isn't telling... No matter to me though, as I was able to retrieve all of the data and end the crisis.

I love their hardware, but like just about every other vendor out there, the tech support leaves a lot to be desired.

djbono11:

We found a software package on the Buffalo site that allows you to reflash the drive. Look for the following:     TSPro-1.01-0.51-withAD.zip
It is a zip file with a Read Me file, follow the instructions in the Read Me, and it "should" work....

Just incase it helps anyone else, I had exactly the same problem with the display registering ========== and a date of 2005 (it's 2008). The box responded to pings but no web / ftp / share access available. I reflashed the firmware using the 1.01 version from the buffalo website.  First. add the following two lines to the nasupdater.ini (if they don't exist, this activates the updater's debug mode)
[SpecialFlags]
Debug=1
Then start updater.exe and click the top left box from the window which launches (the icon) and select Debug Options. ensure it's set to ignore (overwrite) existing flash versions. wait for a while including a couple of reboots whillst it sorts out the boot partitions and .. I hope.. you'll be OK too.
"Reliable" Not really. The Pro II's supposed to be better.

chops_uk - your solution worked. Thanks.
I didn't need to add the following two lines to the nasupdater.ini
[SpecialFlags]
Debug=1
I used a newer version of the firmware.
