Question

How do I setup failover with autofs

Asked by: mkornatz

Currently, I have /etc/fstab configured to mount a single network file server (FS1). I want to failover to FS2 in the case that FS1 is unresponsive. It doesn't seem that I can do that in /etc/fstab, but it looks like autofs may be able to be configured with failover options.

I want to know that I am doing this correctly before I test it, because this change will take place in a production environment. Would I be able to configure my auto.fs file with the following code (specifying two hosts), or do I need to do it a different way?

Thanks in advance.

<directory> <mount-options> <host1>,<host2>:<exported-filesystem>

I have done a little research on this and have found mixed opinions on whether autofs can do this at all.

NOTE: The syntax you show would be used in a Solaris system -- and I believe that Solaris DOES provide failover -- but not on automount, but rather on NFS.

If you think about it, the NFS mount is that part of the protocol manipulation that you would want to implement this capability into... autofs can point to local directory trees, file systems, and even ISO images. NOT just NFS mounted filesystems.

I DO know that some HA (High Availability) Linux distributions support this, but that is a niche market.

What distro are you trying to do this on?

I am running Cent OS.

I found some info on mounting NFS while specifying failovers using the "mount" command:
http://docs.hp.com/en/B1031-90061/ch02s03.html#cihfddhg

I could run a script at startup which uses the command from the above link, I just thought there might be a way to do this using /etc/fstab or automount.

the fstab format has a column for specifying options... and you can always place sections in quotes to group them together...

So, the following line should work:

"server:/path server:/path"         /mount-point      nfs    ro,noauto        0    0

Try it! Wost that can happen is that the syntax fails!

(note: Try it doesn't mean reboot.... it means run the "mount -a" command and see if it works!)

Good Luck!

My bad... I looked over the fact that I need read-write on both fs1 and fs2, your solution will only work for read-only mounting.

I will actually need to configure an NFS cluster to make this work for me.

Thanks for your help.
