Question

Permissions problem in Apache for Linux ERROR 403

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer/2.0.47 (Mandrake Linux/6.3.92mdk) mod_perl/1.99_09 Perl/v5.8.1 mod_ssl/2.0.47 OpenSSL/0.9.7b PHP/4.3.2 Server at <removed> Port 80

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know this same problem is all over this site, but none of the solutions I have tried have worked.

I have installed Apache recently, and had a site working fine (phpBB2). However, I have somehow managed to lose permissions to browse the root site, and any other sites I add.

I can still see the /phpBB2 site with no problems. However, when I try to log in, I get the same message for the file /index.php. Then, after the error, if I go back to the /phpBB2 site root, I can see all the forums and I AM logged in. After that, everything on the phpBB2 site seems to work okay.

I cant see the root server, or my catalog site (which is OS Commerce). I get the above error when trying to access any page, either one that exists, or one that doesnt.

I am pasting some of my config files below so you can disect them and hopefully get back to me with some idea of what is wrong. I have also done a paste of some permissions of folders I think may have something to do with it.

I have been chmod'ing like crazy, and have probably screwed the permissions up completely now. I have also deleted any .htaccess files I found, as I couldnt get it working at all, and thought I may have done something silly (Im sure I have now).

I have tried uninstalling Apache, but RPMdrake tells me it would break my server, and quits me out. I suppose a full /var/www/ reset on permissions would be good. If I dont get this fixed today, I am going to re-install mandrake 9.2 and start from scratch (not fun).

The error log (right at the bottom of this paste) says the problem is down to server configuration.

Sorry for the massive post, but I figured the more information you have, the faster it will be to solve.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Just a wild guess :

/ETC/HTTPD/2.0/CONF/COMMONHTTPD.CONF
(...)
<Directory />
 Options -All -Multiviews
 AllowOverride None
 <IfModule mod_access.c>
   Order deny,allow
   Deny from all             <------------ is this what you want ?
 </IfModule>
</Directory>

THANK YOU!!!

However... I think I now have a completely un-secure server. What is the best way to secure things back up? ? CHMOD etc... and what do I use where I had "Deny from all"

I now have "Deny from None"

Please let me know, as this server is due to go up in a couple of days!!!

I will give you the points, and I will also give someone another 500 points to help me secure the server.

Your points are here: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Web_Servers/Apache/Q_20794173.html

>> However... I think I now have a completely un-secure server. What is the best way to secure things back up? ? CHMOD etc...

Hmm, I see you made all files 777, it should be 660 or 640 in my opinion. Else, I don't know much about phpBB2 or OS-Commerce, but I guess these scripts handle security by themselves (session IDs, login/logout), so it should be enough to make sure that /catalog/ is redirected to /catalog/index.php and same for phpBB2. In both cases, I'd check their docs to see if there's a security-related section. And hopefully someone with more experience with these scripts will give better hints.

You possibly want to restrict access to the /siteadminmysql one. Did you make a backup copy of the .htaccess/.htpasswd files you had before ?

More generally, can you give some details what should be access-restricted and what should be public access ?

>> and what do I use where I had "Deny from all"

If you don't want or need to restrict access to the root, just comment out or delete the whole segment from <IfModule mod_access.c> up to </IfModule>

by: _nn_Posted on 2003-11-11 at 04:43:46ID: 9721761

Wait... that was a <Directory /> directive. That's actually very good, sorry.

<Directory />
 Options -All -Multiviews
 AllowOverride None
 <IfModule mod_access.c>
   Order deny,allow
   Deny from all
 </IfModule>
</Directory>

Keep it like that. But you possibly need another one for your document root :

<Directory /var/www/html>
    AllowOverride All
    Options MultiViews -Indexes Includes FollowSymLinks
    <IfModule mod_access.c>
      Order allow,deny
      Allow from all
    </IfModule>
</Directory>

And what about the CHMOD'ing. I must have to change all that back...?

by: _nn_Posted on 2003-11-11 at 05:05:41ID: 9721862

Yes, that would be much better. Better have strict values here and "open" only what's needed. Even 600 or 700 (for cgi maybe), if it doesn't break the proper functioning of the site. I would do like this :
- make all chmod 600
- test the site
- if a problem appears, check the logs, locate the file that poses a problem, tune its permissions

Thought I should close this as the issue is now resolved... partly due to a reformat.... lol.

Linux... .gotta love it.
