Question

Subdomain redirect in .htaccess

Asked by: bxy11

Here's what I have in .htaccess, which is under my root directory:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST}!^(www\.)?thesitename\.com [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(.*)\.thesitename\.com [NC]
RewriteRule .* /test.php?name=%1 [L]

What I need to do is like this:
If www.thesitename.com or thesitename.com is entered, doing nothing.
If abc.thesitename.com, 123.thesitename.com, etc. are entered, the users will be redirected to the test.php page under the root, where I'll parse the subdomain name using name=%1.

After I modified the .htaccess file and loaded the test.php to the site, I got The page cannot be displayed page with Cannot find server or DNS Error if I type http://aaa.thesitename.com. But if I only type aaa.thesitename.com, I was redirected to the error page from www.overture.com that I've no connection to.

I've no idea what is happening here. Please help. Thanks.

Is there any additional information in the error_log, such as the URL of the actual page that is trying to be accessed?  That might help shed some light...

Who manages DNS for your domain?  Does it have a "wildcard A record" set up?  If not, then that's why it won't resolve.

Have the DNS admin put in a wildcard hostname, once that's in and it propagates you're setup should work perfectly.  You'll know it is ready when you can ping a random hostname & get replies (assuming you can ping your "www" host already).

drcheap,

I've asked our hosting support to set up the DNS for me.  No I cannot ping my www yet.  Besides DNS, do I need to modify httpd.conf file?

If I understand you correctly, I've to modify both DNS and .htaccess, not just one or the other? Thanks.

Once your DNS is updated, try it out.  If it isn't working by that point, and you have access to modify the  httpd.conf file, try putting all your ReWrite directives inside the VirtualHost for this site (assuming it's a VirtualHost).  It should actually work either way.

The only other thing I could think of that might get in the way is if the IP your wildcard hostname resolves to is that of a NameVirtualHost, then you might run into some other difficulties.  I've always used a dedicated IP address for web sites in which I set up like this.

drcheap and others,

It was working for a while but now the site is brought down and not responding to any request.  The access_log has tons of "GET / HTTP/1.1" 301 327

I've changed the status code from 301 to 302 in httpd.conf but it still doesn't work.

In zone db file:

; Host aliases here
;
DNSMANAGER IN A xx.xx.xx.xx
www IN CNAME @ ;1
mail IN CNAME @ ;2
smtp IN CNAME @ ;3
pop IN CNAME @ ;4
ftp IN CNAME @ ;5
* IN CNAME @ ;6

In httpd.conf:

<VirtualHost xx.xx.xx.xx>
ServerAlias *.mysite.com
RedirectMatch 301 (.*) http://www.mysite.com$1
</VirtualHost>

In .htaccess:

IndexIgnore *
DirectoryIndex default.php
php_flag register_globals on
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST}!^(www\.)?mysite\.com [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(.*)\.mysite\.com [NC]
RewriteRule .* /default.php?refid=%1 [L]

When this was working, I could type abc.mysite.com and then be redirected to the default.php under the root. Since the URL, abc.mysite.com stays, I do not use the parameter refid at all. Instead, I use the following code to get the $refid. In this case, $refid = "abc"
Thanks.
$urlarray = explode('.', $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST']);
$refid = $urlarray[0];

So it's still not working right?  If you get tons of those 301 codes upon hitting it, and they don't stop until you hit stop in your browser (or close it or go back) then it's caught in a loop by redirecting to itself.
Here is an example of a site that I have working in a similar fashion.

The rules, in english are:
1. If it's just the domain or the www hostname, leave the URL alone.
2. If it's any other hostname, servie the file index.html from the hostname directory.
3. If it's a hostname within a subdomain (ex: hostname.subdomain.domain.com), use the file hostname.html from the subdomain directory.

The block of Rewrite* directives could be easily transplanted to a .htaccess in the webroot to make it similar to your setup.  In fact, you might even want to change your setup to not use .htaccess for a more central configuration.  One other difference is that I use the absoluteHope this helps...

DNS:

@       A    12.34.56.78
*       CNAME   @

httpd.conf:

<VirtualHost 12.34.56.78:80>
ServerName www.whatever.com
ServerAlias whatever.com
DocumentRoot /path/to/whatever/webroot
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} (www\.|[^(.*)]){1}whatever.com [NC]
RewriteRule .* - [L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^([^.]+)\.whatever.com [NC]
RewriteRule .* /path/to/whatever/webroot/%1/index.html [L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^([^.]+)\.([^.]+)\.whatever.com [NC]
RewriteRule .* /path/to/whatever/webroot/%2/%1.html [L]
</VirtualHost>

P.S. You are correct in that you can use the $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] variable to extract the hostname that was requested, and thus don't need to feed it into the query string.

Thanks so much for pointing me the direction.  I'm going to try this out and will keep you updated on that.  Thanks again.

drcheap,

The server is back and running.  Everything *seems* working fine since those tons of 301 messages are gong from the access log.  But I kept the Rewrite stuff in .htaccess instead of httpd.conf file.  But your help has been the most appreciated.  Thanks.

by: drcheapPosted on 2004-01-21 at 17:55:37ID: 10170512

It will work either way (httpd.conf or .htaccess) so whatever works best for you is good.

Feel free to accept my answer ;)
