Question

PHP, Apache (Win32) and COM don't play in the same sandbox.

Asked by: movemedia

Hello all.  I have been using COM calls from PHP for some time now in IIS and everything works fine.  I have changed jobs lately (and servers) and now, i can't seem to get COM to work with PHP.  The differences (major) between the two boxes are:

Box 1:  (PHP COM calls working)
Windows Advanced Server 2000 running IIS
PHP 4.3.x running in CGI mode
PHP info can't be found on this box

Box 2:  (PHP COM calls not working)
Windows XP Professional running Apache
PHP 4.3.1 running in ISAPI mode
PHP info can be found here:  http://dev.postcards4insurance.com/info.php

I try to run the following script:
<?php

$objConnection = new COM("ADODB.Connection");

phpinfo();
?>

and i get this:  http://dev.postcards4insurance.com/crash.gif

now, don't tell me that i shouldn't be connecting to databases this way through PHP, because that isn't my problem ;-).  I used the ADODB.Connection ProgID because it is very common and is installed on this machine.  In my actual environment, I will be using an custom COM object written by another developer.

Thanks!  and any help is greatly appreciated.

is apache running under the system account?
you could try changing it to another account and see if that works

Thank you much for the reply.

I believe it is, because by default i can use PHP to write to directories on the system.  I don't explicitly have to give it write access to these directories.  However, i'm not positive how i would check this for sure?  do you know how i might go about doing that?

i think it is in computer management/services under adminstrative options in the control panel
try making apache run as the user logged on not the service

by: movemediaPosted on 2004-03-22 at 08:55:59ID: 10650524

ok, to answer your question, apache was running at the system account.  I changed it to another account (the user i am currently logged on as) and things still didn't work.

any other ideas?

hmm not sure, have you compared the two php.ini files on each server and see if there are any major differences.
there is a COM section towards the end of the file you can check out that too.

by: movemediaPosted on 2004-03-23 at 08:50:40ID: 10659117

that would be a lovely idea, and no i haven't tried it.

one problem:  that ini file was on my old employer's box, and well, needless to say, i am now in competition with him, so i really doubt he'd let me poke around his php.ini file.  I tried looking for files that contained phpinfo() as well, but couldn't find any.

i know. this sounds like a stupid issue here.  If i can't resolve it, we might have to switch to IIS.  something i would rather not do.  not that i don't care for IIS, but because it would involve increased costs.

I could be wrong, i mean, maybe this isn't an issue with apache at all.  I just think it might be, because IIS worked fine in the past (on another box)

Thanks for your help!
-Chris

You might want to try updating to 4.3.5.  It was released in the last 24 hours.

It might address your problem.

by: movemediaPosted on 2004-03-26 at 08:42:58ID: 10688634

Hi everyone,

Thanks for getting back to me!  =)

zombieooo:  I tried copying those files to c:\winnt\system32 but i still had a problem.  Also, i tried going through the tutorial, but i can't do too much because this is a production server so i don't want to bring down sites.  I did confirm that i followed those steps pretty acurately though.

alexhogan:  you might be right.  i remember i had be using other versions of php when i found problems with this before.  i will try this in a bit.

another thing that should be noted, although perhaps not related... i have a cron job that runs nightly for backups.  the script is written in php and the job uses php.exe to parse through it.  it seems that lately the php script interpreter has been crashing.  maybe my install is f***ked.  i guess we'll see.

Thanks alexhogan!  that worked just fine..  I had upgraded PHP in the past with no success, but this version seems to work.

now, it doesn't work for the app i need it yet, but that is an error i can deal with... hopefully =)

i created another post for this, and i'm not sure how i award you points for this, so could you just post your solution on this thread:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Web_Languages/PHP/PHP_Windows/Q_20925072.html

and i will award the points there.

Thanks.  And thank you all for your help!  Much appriecated!
