Redirect all subdomain requests

Hi,
We host two domains..mysite.com and mysite.com.au
I would like to be able to redirect any mysite.com.au to its respective mysite.com domain without having to create virtual hosts for each of the sites.
Currently we have virtual hosts set up for each of our sites eg site1.mysite.com and site1.mysite.com.au, both pointing to the same directory.
Is it possible to have Apache redirect any requests to site1.mysite.com.au to site1.mysite.com without having to create multiple virtual hosts for each?
I actually need to to redirect rather than re-write (I think) as some of our sites use the $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] variable in their code.
