Question

"no listening sockets available, shutting down"

Hi all i have bought myself the oreilly book apache the definitive guide and have installed apache ok on my suse linux box.

however as part of the second chapter you set apache to run a different site installed in a different location on the server /usr/www/APACHE3/site.toddle

in there are a htdocs, logs, can conf directory

the command to start apache with this new site is

./httpd -d /usr/www/APACHE3/site.toddle

however when i run this i get the error

"no listening sockets available, shutting down
unable to open logs"

i have checked in my httpd.conf file and there are the following lines

User username
Group groupname
Listen 80
ServerName my586
DocumentRoot /usr/www/APACHE3/site.toddle/htdocs/
ErrorLogs logs/error_log

i have also checked and nothing is running on port 80 using netstat | grep http

any help would be really appreciated

you should create 'logs' subdirectory in /usr/www/APACHE3/site.toddle/htdocs/
also this directory should have write permissions for 'nobody' user
and I recommend you to write full path here:
ErrorLogs /usr/www/APACHE3/site.toddle/logs/error_log

I supposed why you have no logs. Now why your server is not starting, I guess that:
ServerName my586
is incorrect, you should fully qualified domain name here (resolvable to some IP). You may use 'localhost' for testing.

What ip address is returned if you issue the command "ping my588"?  Is it your IP address.

If you issue the command "netstat -anA inet | grep :80"  does something show listening on port 80?
