Help me to set up example site on "localhost", please!

Hi ya'll! I'm having trouble getting the examples from the book "Practical Web 2.0 Applications with PHP"  to work...

Environment:
OS: Windows Vista
Web Server: Apache by XAMPP (next latest version, 1.6.6 i think)
Database: MySql by XAMPP

I think it's the .htaccess file that is the worst promlem.
-When the .htaccess file is present, all you see is an Internal Server Error.
-When .htaccess is removed, I get a Smarty error.

-Virtual hosts are in place  (can get simple sites to work) .


Please make the example below (chapter 2)  work (in XAMPP for windows)  and post all necesarry settings files :-)
