htaccess allow access to subdirectory from another subdirectory

How can I create a rule in htaccess to allow access to a subdirectory only from another subdirectory as described below?

- grant access to /assets/pdfs/<sitename>/*.pdf from /<sitename>/*

What You mean by access? Referrer? referrer is easily spoofable, security by obscurity will not work.

scripts (like php/perl/anycgi), then You should either place /assets/pdfs/<sitename>/ outside documentRoot or restrict any http access.

The level of security offered by referre is acceptable, the question is how to write the htaccess rule please.

Thanks for that ravenpl, however this needs to be done on the top level Apache htacess file. Is that possible? The <sitename> would need to be dynamic therefore.

Thanks ravenpl. Are you sure this works? The response I got from the tech team is "You can't use back-references (or any other kind of variable) as the second argument of the RewriteCond; only strings and regexes."

Unfortunately They're right :(
I think You have to do it static then... Or maybe with external rewrite map (i have no time just now to craft one for You).
