Question

mod rewrite rules not working for virtual host

Asked by: ellandrd

I am running MAMP with a number of virtual hosts which were setup using VirtualHostX.

localhost works fine - as in rewrite rules all behave correctly.  Out of the 3 VH's only one has mod rewrites active however some rules do not take affect and I do not know what is causing the problem.

For example if I view:

http://local.site2.com/ - displays fine - some extra info from $_SERVER:

    [SERVER_PROTOCOL] => HTTP/1.1
    [REQUEST_METHOD] => GET
    [QUERY_STRING] =>
    [REQUEST_URI] => /
    [SCRIPT_NAME] => /index.php
    [PHP_SELF] => /index.php

http://local.site2.com/about-us/ - displays fine - extra info from $_SERVER:

    [SERVER_PROTOCOL] => HTTP/1.1
    [REQUEST_METHOD] => GET
    [QUERY_STRING] => request_uri=about-us
    [REQUEST_URI] => /about-us/
    [SCRIPT_NAME] => /index.php
    [PHP_SELF] => /index.php

http://local.site2.com/courses/ - displays fine - some extra info from $_SERVER:

    [SERVER_PROTOCOL] => HTTP/1.1
    [REQUEST_METHOD] => GET
    [QUERY_STRING] =>
    [REQUEST_URI] => /courses/
    [SCRIPT_NAME] => /courses.php
    [PHP_SELF] => /courses.php/

http://local.site2.com/courses/beginner-2-day-courses/ - fails to load beginner 2 day courses page content.  instead loads the main courses page - some extra info from $_SERVER:

    [SERVER_PROTOCOL] => HTTP/1.1
    [REQUEST_METHOD] => GET
    [QUERY_STRING] =>
    [REQUEST_URI] => /courses/2-day-course/
    [SCRIPT_NAME] => /courses.php
    [PHP_SELF] => /courses.php/2-day-course/

Logs done show anything odd that would lead me to the source of the problem.

The directive for the virtual host is as follows:

<Directory "/Applications/MAMP/Sites/site2.com/htdocs/">
      Options Indexes MultiViews FollowSymLinks
      AllowOverride All
      Order allow,deny
      Allow from all
</Directory>
<VirtualHost *:80>
      ServerName "local.site2.com"
      DocumentRoot "/Applications/MAMP/Sites/site2.com/htdocs"
</VirtualHost>

Try adding a [L] flag to each of your rules. That tells it that if a rule is matched, then don't bother running the others.

A good place for figuring these things out is http://civilolydnad.se/projects/rewriterule/

You can set your rules, enter a text string, and it'll tell you what's being matched and re-written.

There must be something beyond that as none of the rules could produce "2-day-course" from "beginner-2-day-courses"

Adding L so I have [NC,L] hasn't made any difference.  I have also tried running my rules passed that tool but it doesn't do anything?  I click run and nothing happens! Anyways....

One thing I did notice is that for pages where I pass 1 or more parameters in the URL, the PHP_SELF values contains the parameter(s)....  Is this correct?

For example, look at this one: [PHP_SELF] => /courses.php/2-day-course/

Shouldn't it just be [PHP_SELF] => /courses.php with the QUERY_STRING containing the passed parameters?

Have you allowed overrides in your Virtual Host configuration

Allow override = All

You dont really need ALL , I think FileInfo would be enough but not sure though you can test with All

Yes - look at my directive above....

Ellandrd,

I don't think it's a problem with your rules. I just setup an htaccess file with your rules in, and a course.php file containing the attached code.

When calling the page in a browser, these were the results.

Called -> mydomain.com/courses/
    [QUERY_STRING] =>
     [REQUEST_URI] => /courses/
    [SCRIPT_NAME] => /courses.php
    [PHP_SELF] => /courses.php

Called -> mydomain.com/courses/2-day-course
    [QUERY_STRING] => type_uri=2-day-course
    [REQUEST_URI] => /courses/2-day-course
    [SCRIPT_NAME] => /courses.php
    [PHP_SELF] => /courses.php

Called -> mydomain.com/courses/2-day-course/test
    [QUERY_STRING] => type_uri=2-day-course&request_uri=test
    [REQUEST_URI] => /courses/2-day-course/test
    [SCRIPT_NAME] => /courses.php
    [PHP_SELF] => /courses.php

I'm guessing this is what you are expecting. As I say, your rules are working fine.

<?php
printf( "[QUERY_STRING] => %s", $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING']);
printf( "<br>[REQUEST_URI] => %s", $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']);
printf( "<br>[SCRIPT_NAME] => %s", $_SERVER['SCRIPT_NAME']);
printf( "<br>[PHP_SELF] => %s", $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']);br
?>

so what could be causing the problem?  my apache server setup?

by: ChrisStanyonPosted on 2009-11-02 at 12:35:58ID: 25723439

Your apache conf looks fine as well.

Do you have anything else setup that might interfere with the query strings. Are you running this through a framework like codeigniter etc that does it's own routing? Do you have code inside of courses.php that does any forwarding?

As a test, if you have just the code I posted above in the courses.php file and nothing else, are you getting the results you need when calling the pages.

by: ellandrdPosted on 2009-11-02 at 12:44:26ID: 25723508

the directive above is only for that one VH.  do you want to see my main apache conf itself?

Im not running any frameworks.  I just have MAMP setup and VirtualHostX creating my VH's...

courses.php is empty apart from some echo statements printing out the query parameters.

If i run your code I get this:

[QUERY_STRING] =>
[REQUEST_URI] => /courses/
[SCRIPT_NAME] => /courses.php
[PHP_SELF] => /courses.php/

Notice again how the PHP_SELF has this slash at the end (when it shouldnt right?)

by: ChrisStanyonPosted on 2009-11-02 at 13:01:00ID: 25723669

Hmm,

Not really sure. In your apache conf, try adding a trailing slash to your VirtualHost document route. Also in your htaccess file try using the following:

There's square brackets round the forward slash instead of parenthesis "(".

Other than trying that, I'm not really sure.

RewriteRule ^courses[/]?$ courses.php [nc]
RewriteRule ^courses/([^/\.]+)[/]?$ courses.php?type_uri=$1 [nc]
RewriteRule ^courses/([^/\.]+)/([^/\.]+)[/]?$ courses.php?type_uri=$1&request_uri=$2 [nc]

I've managed to fix the problem.  I problem was VirtualHostX

I looked at the default conf in MAMP to see how the example virtual hosts were setup to work and compared them too the ones that VirtualHostX created and noticed a difference.  One good thing about VirtualHostX is this program allows you to add custom directives so I added the default settings from MAMP's virtual host setup and it worked:

<VirtualHost ...>
...
...
...
<Directory "/path/to/htdocs">
Options All
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>
