Question

Oracle data source Username/password?

Asked by: tecumsehjoe

Hello again folks.  I created an oracle database, specified the passwords for SYS and SYSTEM and specified the username/password for the repository also.
I then go to CFMX Admin and create a data source.
I give the data source the same name as the SID of my Oracle (9i) DB
I state the SID
I give the Server name (127.0.0.1 and Ive also tried the computer name, in combination with the following)
I tried all three username/password combinations mentioned above (sys, system and respository).
After all attempts I get the following error message from CFMX Admin;

Connection verification failed for data source: NAETSDEV
[]java.sql.SQLException: SQLException while attempting to connect: java.sql.SQLException: [Macromedia][Oracle JDBC Driver][Oracle]ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException: SQLException while attempting to connect: java.sql.SQLException: [Macromedia][Oracle JDBC Driver][Oracle]ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied

Since I am new to oracle I figure that I am not entering the correct username/passwords (since there are default passwords)?
Or is this something all together different?  Any suggestions, troubleshooting steps to guide me on my way to figuring this out?

Create an ODBC connection via control panel then, in CFMX Administrator, create an ODBC Socket connection pointing to the connection created before.

by: tecumsehjoePosted on 2003-06-04 at 14:25:04ID: 8652409

I tried creating an ODBC connection and when I tried to verify the connection it told me;
Unable to connect
SQL state=28000
[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA - 01017: Invalid username/password; login denied

Once again I tried all of the above mentioned passwords...???

You have to create UserName in oracle first
If you are using PL*SQL run:

CREATE USER "NEW_USER_NAME"  PROFILE "DEFAULT" IDENTIFIED BY "ANY_PASSWORD" ;

Then:
GRANT "CONNECT" TO " NEW_USER_NAME ";

Then put in CMXADMIN page user name and password you just created.
You can stop and start sql*plus with new user name and passord to test it.
Good Luck.

CFMX Administrator enterprise has oracle native driver wich is much faster then odbc. You do not need odbc with CFMX Enterprise.

by: tecumsehjoePosted on 2003-06-04 at 14:59:35ID: 8652604

ok when you say "profile 'default'", what is 'default'? what should/can be put there?  Also when you say "grant 'connect'", what is 'connect'?  What should be in place of 'connect'?  I have CFMX developers edition because I am doing local testing and trying to keep costs down.  Why does everyone who knows Im working with oracle (for the first time too!) always tell me good luck?!?!  Thanx

by: VolkaPosted on 2003-06-04 at 15:13:24ID: 8652681

Scip  PROFILE "DEFAULT"
run just:

CREATE USER "NEW_USER_NAME" IDENTIFIED BY "ANY_PASSWORD";

by: VolkaPosted on 2003-06-04 at 15:20:48ID: 8652719

GRANT "CONNECT" TO " NEW_USER_NAME ";
you granting the connect role to your new user without that that user not able to connect to oracle.

read about Users, Roles and Privilages - Oracle.
Very good book to get started with oracle as well as reference

is that book really a good one for oracle beginners?  I notice that they have a book for 9i also, any good?  I really need to get my CF hooked up to the DB, and hopefully faster than reading a _ _ _ _ page book

ok
what programm do you use to connect directly to Oracle?
Do you have DBA Studio?
Do you have DBA administrator at you company?
Who install Oracle for you?
Ask them to create user name and password for you.
In order to work with Oracle
you need to have username and password.

by: VolkaPosted on 2003-06-04 at 18:55:18ID: 8653622

Sorry, you sad before that you created db for yourself
And specified the passwords for SYS and SYSTEM
So you should be able to connect. Can you connect to Oracle using any
Oracle soft like DBA studio?

by: VolkaPosted on 2003-06-04 at 20:21:35ID: 8653947

You will need to configure Oracle so you will be able to connect to it using sql*plus.
After you able to connect good idea to create user for yourself.
Let say:
CREATE USER "tecumsehjoe" IDENTIFIED BY "you_password";
GRANT "CONNECT" TO "tecumsehjoe";
GRANT " resource" TO "tecumsehjoe";
GRANT "dba" TO "tecumsehjoe";

Then when you will be creating tables, views (when connected as tecumsehjoe) it all will under your schema tecumsehjoe.
At this point you should be able connect to Oracle threw Cold Fusion(just for test)
After you did that create another user for Cold fusion.
Let say application_dsn:
CREATE USER " application_dsn " IDENTIFIED BY "password";
GRANT "CONNECT" TO "application_dsn ";
Now you can connect Cold Fusion to Oracle using user application_dsn ;

Now if you connected to Oracle threw sql*plas as tecumsehjoe
Create your first tbl_first;

Create public synonym tbl_first on tbl_first;
Grant select on tbl_first to application_dsn;

Now if your Cold fusion connect to Oracle using application_dsn it only can run
select statement From tbl_first.

I hope this information will help you at least a little bit to get started.

See in one of my projects we had a same problem while creating a dsn with same name as that of the service.

so i would suggest you try to change the dsn name to something else other than that of the service name...

try this out and let me know..

Also which server are you using CFMX professional or enterprise

Hart

this problem occured for me in CF 5.0 so i don't think that must be the cause of it...

so i think you should just create a new user and try it out as Volka as suggested

If you running Oracle and Cold fusion on different machine
And Cold Fusion is not MX enterprise you might need to install
Oracle Client on the machine that running Cold Fusion.
With enterprise that has Oracle native driver you do not need to do that.
If you still have problem to connect try
http://webforums.macromedia.com/coldfusion/
that is very good forums and it is free.
