How do I do a query from within CFSCRIPT

ok, I admit it, I am coming to Cold Fusion from languages like Javascript, Perl, PHP etc. I have done lots of programming in these languages and I have to say that I am only using Cold Fusion because that is what the client wants! I may therefore by trying to bend the language to be more than what I am familiar with rather than the 'right' way that it is done in Cold Fusion.

I would *much* prefer to do everything within CFSCRIPT tags, that makes more sense to me but how can I do a database query inside a CFSCRIPT? Or is there no choice but to do in inside a CFQUERY tag?

I saw a hint inside a reference book that I could access CFML tags inside CFScript by using the cffuntion to create a custom function that calls the tag. Is this something that people would recommend or condone?

well u can use most of the tags inside CFSCRIPT

but i DONT think - using a CFQUERY tag inside a CFSCRIPT wld be easy enough as compared to using a normal CFQUERY tag.
Ii dont see a reason why u wld wanna avoid using a CFQUERY tag.

but ne-ways ... see what others have to say on this & decide acordingly :)

Thanks cheekycj for that answer. It gave me most of what I needed.

anandkp: the reason is that I am much happier with a script based language and the more I look at CF the more I hate it (rather like I hate basic) especially the [1] based arrays. But then if it pays the bills... CF is GREAT. lol

Glad to help.  I am not a fan of CF's tags either - makes for ugly code but I must admit if you want to crank out a website it is one of the better scripting languages for that.  If I have time for a project I do it in Java for the most part.
