Question

How to check if there is a value in Checkbox or radiobox?

Asked by: 1270034401

If I want to check if there is a value in textbox, I know I will use:

<cfif not len(trim(#myqueryname.question#))>
                       You should input your first name.
 </cfif>

But for the radiobox or checkbox, I tried like this:

 <cfif #lmyqueryname.question# IS "">
            You should make a choice.
 </cfif>

ALso, I tried
 <cfif #lmyqueryname.question# IS "False">
            You should make a choice.
 </cfif>

It didn't work either.

Can you help me? Thanks in advance!

you can use a javascript fucntion for the radio button like the following:

for (counter = 0; counter < theForm.radiobutton1.length; counter++)
                  {
                        if(theForm.radiobutton1(counter).checked)
                        radio_choice = true;
                  }
                        if(!radio_choice)
                              {
                                    alert("Plese select your choice");

                                    return(false);
                              }

sorry, here is the full code:

function setfocus_validator_ser(theForm)
            {
                        var radio_choice = false;

            for (counter = 0; counter < theForm.radiobutton1.length; counter++)
                  {
                        if(theForm.radiobutton1(counter).checked)
                        radio_choice = true;
                  }
                        if(!radio_choice)
                              {
                                    alert("Plese select your choice");

                                    return(false);
                              }

Except for javascript, if I have better ways to do that since there are more than 100 questions used checkbox or radiobox.

Thanks!

No. I won't force the user to choose an answer. i just want to let them know they missed some questions. it should be totally depends on them to change it or not.

by: 1270034401Posted on 2004-03-05 at 07:40:56ID: 10523601

I have figured it out. I still can use the same code used to test if there is a value in textbox. That is, I didn't use any javascript. Just like this:

<cfif not len(trim(#myqueryname.question#))> it works!

As long as you don't <cfparam> try and use this

 <cfif #isDefined(lmyqueryname.question)#>
<cfelse>
      You missed this question
</cfif>

1270034401,  your answer will not work if the user doesn't answer the checkbox.  The reason is that checkboxes do not get submitted and therefore are not defined - if they are not checked.

SO to test for a checkbox you need to use the IsDefined function for the checkbox and radio button.

text and textareas:
Len(Trim(form.fieldname))

checkboxes/radio buttons:
IsDefined(form.fieldname)

select boxes:
just test the value since one is always submitted.  If you make a empty option then you can test the same way as textareas.

Thanks, anybody. But I tried my own code, it works. If I have other question in the future, I will ask you again. Thanks!

The only reason your code is working is because you are pulling hte information from a  query not from a form.

If you decide to pull the information from a form then you will have to use the IsDefined function for testing checkboxes.
