Question

consuming webservices that require ssl certificate

Asked by: SBennett

I am trying to access the paypal webservice but I can't just use the cfinvoke tag because PayPal requires you to acces their webservice via HTTPS with an SSL certificate. I have installed the certificate on my server and tried to execute the following code:

<cfinvoke
      webservice = "https://api.sandbox.paypal.com/wsdl/PayPalSvc.wsdl"
      method = "TransactionSearchRequest"
      StartDate = "#dateadd('d', -1, now())#"
      returnVariable="result"
      >

And I get the following error:

Error Occurred While Processing Request
Could not generate stub objects for web service invocation.
Name: https://api.sandbox.paypal.com/wsdl/PayPalSvc.wsdl. WSDL: https://api.sandbox.paypal.com/wsdl/PayPalSvc.wsdl. javax.net.ssl.SSLPeerUnverifiedException: peer not authenticated It is recommended that you use a web browser to retrieve and examine the requested WSDL document for correctness. If the requested WSDL document can't be retrieved or it is dynamically generated, it is likely that the target web service has programming errors.

I have talked to PayPal and they are researching how I can connect with coldfusion but they don't seem to know much about how to pass the certificate along with the ssl request in coldfusion.

Has anyone else had a problem with consuming webservices that require an ssl certificate? and How can I resolve it?

Thanks,
Scott

When you access those urls with the browser it returns nothing, first make it return a result in your browser to make sure it really works..

You have to get a certificate from PayPal before you can get to the wsdl URL. I have the certificate and I have done that and I can see the wsdl when viewing in the browser on my server. The problem is getting cfusion to use the certificate when I call the cfinvoke tag.

here's how to install the certificate for CF (I'm on a windows platform but should be similar if you're on *nix)

for this example, "www.abc.com.cer" is the name of the certificate

1. save the cert to "C:\CFusionMX\runtime\jre\lib\security\" NOTE: this path may be different depending on your setup.
2. open a command prompt and go to that directory
3. run this command:

keytool -import -trustcacerts -keystore cacerts -storepass changeit -noprompt -alias "www.abc.com" -file "www.abc.com.cer"

4. restart CF

give it a try.

No one on EE was able to answer this question so it should be closed and I should be refunded my points. However, I have not been idly waiting for an answer, and I thought I would share the following information with anyone who may be experiencing this problem:

I have talked to Macromedia's senior technical support, and Macromedia says there is no way to access the Paypal API using standard coldfusion tags because Coldfusion does not support the inclusion of a client ssl certificate(which paypals api security requires) in cfhttp tag or in the cfinvoke functionality (and they made it clear they were not planning on fixing this anytime in the near future).

But it is possible to have a cfx tag (or a set of cfx tags) created to handle the PayPal soap api calls.

Several eBay executives came to visit our company yesterday (10/19/2004) and I brought this up to them, and they indicated it would be worthwile for eBay to invest in developing such a CFX tag for the coldfusion developers in the eBay/Paypal developer comunity to use.
