Question

CFMX + SQL Display multiple records as one row

Asked by: nido

I am using SQL Server 2000 and ColdFusionMX. I have a query that returns several records per user (the database is not relational), one of the fields contains different information depending on the type stored in another field. Can you tell me how to display all the fields as one record. The query is run via coldfusion as I need to pass in a list of userids and use the IN clause so this makes it tricky to use a stored proc. Format is shown below :

Query :
ID        Name          group_name           group_type
1         JSmith         Katherines              3
1         JSmith         London                   2
1         JSmith         User                       1
2         ABrown       Bedales                   3
2         ABrown       London                    2
3         JBloggs       Bedales                   3

Groups:
1 - User type, 2 - Region, 3 - school

Output :
Name              School                Region              User Type
JSmith             Katherines          London              User
ABrown           Bedales              London
JBloggs           Bedales

thanks in advance

Hi nido,

1) Query or query
Exmple : http://builder.com.com/5100-6387-5034807.html

2) Use group= attribute of <CFOUTPUT>
<cfoutput
   query = "query_name"
   group = "query_column"
   groupCaseSensitive = "Yes" or "No"
   startRow = "start_row"
   maxRows = "max_rows_output">

Something like this may work for you:

<cfquery name="qryResults">
     SELECT BaseData.ID, BaseData.Name, SchoolData.School, RegionData.Region, UserData.UserType
          FROM (SELECT DISTINCT ID, [Name] FROM DataTable) BaseData
               LEFT JOIN (SELECT ID, group_name AS UserType FROM DataTable WHERE group_type = 1) UserData
                    ON BaseData.ID = UserData.ID
               LEFT JOIN (SELECT ID, group_name AS Region FROM DataTable WHERE group_type = 2) RegionData
                    ON BaseData.ID = RegionData.ID
               LEFT JOIN (SELECT ID, group_name AS School FROM DataTable WHERE group_type = 3) SchoolData
                    ON BaseData.ID = SchoolData.ID
          WHERE BaseData.ID IN (#FORM.ListOfIDs#)
</cfquery>

SELECT Schools.id, Schools.name, Schools.school, Regions.region, Users.usertype
FROM
(SELECT ID, name, group_name AS School FROM table WHERE group_type = 3) Schools
LEFT OUTER JOIN
(SELECT ID, name, group_name AS Region FROM table WHERE group_type = 2) Regions
ON Schools.ID = Regions.ID
LEFT OUTER JOIN
(SELECT ID, name, group_name AS Usertype FROM table WHERE group_type = 1) Users
ON Users.ID = Schools.ID
WHERE Schools.ID IN (1,2,3,4)

I don't think I can use sub queries as I am not selecting from one table I am selecting from tables using joins and they may return more than one row

Hi nido,
Assuming that I have given you the advise of query of query or using group in cfoutput

You can make the derived tables (these are not sub queries) as complex as needed.  Using DISTINCT or GROUP BY can help get rid of multiple entries.

Could you show more of your table structure and current query?  We could help you convert it to work.

by: mrichmonPosted on 2004-12-06 at 12:55:18ID: 12758130

As shooksm said there is no reason the derived tables - or even subqueries - can not be complexly created.

If you give us more information like the actual queries you are using to get the separate date we can help combine it .

ok here is the coldfusion query I am using. the gro_name field contains all fields (school, region, lea and user type) and the grt_name field identifies which of these fields it is.

SELECT      tbl_users.usr_id
            , tbl_users.usr_title
            , tbl_users.usr_firstname
            , tbl_users.usr_lastname
            , tbl_users.usr_telephone
            , tbl_groups.gro_name
            , tbl_groups.gro_type
            , tbl_group_types.grt_name

FROM      tbl_groups tbl_groups_1 RIGHT OUTER JOIN
        tbl_group_types RIGHT OUTER JOIN
        tbl_groups ON dbo.tbl_group_types.grt_id = tbl_groups.gro_type
            RIGHT OUTER JOIN pvt_users_groups ON tbl_groups.gro_id = dbo.pvt_users_groups.usg_gro1_id ON
        tbl_groups_1.gro_id = pvt_users_groups.usg_gro2_id
            RIGHT OUTER JOIN tbl_users ON pvt_users_groups.usg_usr_id = tbl_users.usr_id

WHERE   pvt_users_groups.usg_usr_id IN (#PreserveSingleQuotes(arguments.userid)#)
            <!--- this is for filtering the query --->
<cfif IsDefined("arguments.school") AND trim(len(arguments.school)) GT 0>
                  AND (tbl_group_types.grt_name  = 'school' AND tbl_groups.gro_name LIKE '%#trim(arguments.school)#%')
            </cfif>
            <cfif IsDefined("arguments.lea") AND trim(len(arguments.lea)) GT 0>
                  AND (tbl_group_types.grt_name  = 'lea' AND tbl_groups.gro_name LIKE '%#trim(arguments.lea)#%')
            </cfif>
            <cfif IsDefined("arguments.user_type") AND trim(len(arguments.user_type)) GT 0>
                  AND (tbl_group_types.grt_name = 'user_type' AND tbl_groups.gro_name LIKE '%#trim(arguments.user_type)#%')
            </cfif>
            <cfif IsDefined("arguments.name") AND trim(len(arguments.name)) GT 0>
                  AND (usr_firstname + ' ' + usr_Lastname like '%#trim(arguments.name)#%')
            </cfif>

Let me know if this doesn't make sense. Thanks
