Question

An exception occurred when instantiating a Com object

Asked by: davidsanderson

I'm trying to initiate a Word COM object with the following code:
<!--- Try to connect to the Word application object --->
<CFTRY>
    <!--- If it exists, connect to it --->
    <CFOBJECT
        ACTION="CONNECT"
        CLASS="Word.Application"
        NAME="objWord"
        TYPE="COM">
  <CFCATCH>
    <!--- The object doesn't exist, so create it --->
    <CFOBJECT
        ACTION="CREATE"
        CLASS="Word.Application"
        NAME="objWord"
        TYPE="COM">
  </CFCATCH>
</CFTRY>

However, I get an error when running the page:
"An exception occurred when instantiating a Com object.
The cause of this exception was that: coldfusion.runtime.java.JavaObjectInstantiationException: Object Instantiation Exception.."

The line CLASS="Word.Application" is what is highlighted in the error. I found this article:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_18623

I made sure typeviewer.dll is registered but I still get the error. Any ideas?

The article you found takes care of a different error message. The error you got is because CF can't instantiate a Word instance. Is Word correctly installed on the server? And does CF have the privileges to access it?

BTW, are you familiar with CFComet? http://cfregex.com/cfcomet/ There you can find a lot of information on CF & Com objects. But I guess you knew, since your code looks kinda exactly like their example ;)

How do I figure out if CF has the privileges to access Word? Yes, I copied cfcomet's example.

If you installed both CF & Word under an administrator account, it's probably not the privileges that are causing the problem.

Another possibility is having too many instances opened. I once played around with Word and CF. The script had a flaw which caused Word to display a message box. But since CF executes Word, you never got to see it and the instance just stayed active. On the next request, another instance was opened and so on. After 10 or 20 instances or so, I got the same error you get.
Might not be the case in your situation, but to be sure, check your task manager for multiple Word instances.

In the services panel, where you start and stop services, you can also have a service interact with the desktop. If you enable that setting for CF, you'll see whenever CF opens Word. And any message boxes too for that matter.

HTH,
Ruud

I once had the same problem and posted the solution that helped me back then. So that would qualify as an answer.
Too bad we don't know whether it helped the poster too.
