I have a nice little cfm page that generates an excel file when called... but if I am using internet explorer it always opens inside it... which I do not want... is there anyway around this so that the data is opened up directly in excel without removing the plugin or whatever it uses??

Just was re-reading your post and looks like you are trying to just do it for that particular application. Well, there have been posts on EE related to invoking Office apps from within CF.

The problem you have is that there is no plugin per say anymore.
IE has integrated office into itself so that it does this automatically.
The only way to get what you want is to right-click the file, say save as and then open the saved fiel outside of the browser.
You can try Sree's method for your computer only, but you can't do this for other people accessing the file.
yes you can open an excel document outside of IE...
there's a couple approaches....
1)________ This is client side so the user has to set this up on their machine....
1. Launch Windows Explorer.
2. From the View menu, select Options("Folder Options" if Internet Explorer 4.0 is installed).
3. From the Options dialog box, click the File Types tab.
4. From the listing of "Registered File Types," select "Microsoft Word Document," and click Edit.
5. From the Edit File Type screen, clear the "Browse in same window" check box, which toggles whether a Word document is launched outside of Internet Explorer.
6. Click OK to close the dialog boxes.
2)_______From the web page... Second with a little VB you can do this....
1. Create a client-side function that instantiates Microsoft Excel, and accepts the URL of the document as its argument.
2. Create a button to call the function, passing the URL of the Excel document.

I am not sure if you want this behavior just for your application or for any Excel file that the browser tries to open? Well, if it is the second case, then check this link on how to edit the registry so that it will open the Office documents in their own application windows rather than opening within IE.
