Question

Dateformat for field bound to CFGRID

Asked by: CDL2

I am using a flash form to display a grid that has fields bound to the grid.  One of the fields is a datefield.  It's displaying the date as "Mon Apr23 01:00:00 GMT-0500 1963".  I want to display the date as dd-mmm-yyyy.  I tried using #DateFormat(date, "mask")# in the <cfinput>, both in the bind and in the onchange, but it didn't work.

How can I format the way the date is displayed in the details field (not in the grid)?

Following is some of the code (it goes against an MS Access db):

<!---  Get employee list  --->
<cfquery datasource="ds" name="employees">
      SELECT *
      FROM Employees
      WHERE emp_Status='A'
      ORDER BY emp_LastName, emp_FirstName
</cfquery>
.
.
.
.
.
<!---  Display data grid  --->
<cfform format="flash" action="formdump.cfm" skin="haloblue">

      <!---  Data grid  --->
      <cfgrid name="gridEmployees" query="employees" colheaderbold="yes" rowheaders="no" >
            <!---  Don't show all columns  (show selected columns)  --->
            <cfgridcolumn name="emp_LastName" header="Last Name">
            <cfgridcolumn name="emp_FirstName" header="First Name">
      </cfgrid>

.
.
.
.
.
      <!---  Input fields  --->
      <cfinput type="datefield" name="emp_Birthdate" label="Birthdate:"
                  size="15" maxlength="11"
                  bind="{gridEmployees.dataProvider[gridEmployees.selectedIndex]
                                                ['emp_Birthdate']}"
            onchange="gridEmployees.dataProvider.editField(gridEmployees.selectedIndex,                                                 'emp_Birthdate', emp_Birthdate.text);">

did you putting a mask on the input field?
 mask="dd-mmm-yyyy"

by: CDL2Posted on 2006-02-07 at 14:34:49ID: 15897533

Yes, I tried that.  It seemed to ignore it.

<cfinput type="datefield" name="emp_Birthdate" label="Birthdate:"
      size="15" maxlength="11" mask="dd-mmm-yyyy"
      bind="{gridEmployees.dataProvider[gridEmployees.selectedIndex]
                        ['emp_Birthdate']}"            onchange="gridEmployees.dataProvider.editField(gridEmployees.selectedIndex,                                   'emp_Birthdate', emp_Birthdate.text);">

Try taking off the bind on the input  and adding this to the form

      <cfformitem type="script">
            function demo(){
                  _root.emp_Birthdate.text=_root.gridEmployees.selectedItem.cn
            }
      </cfformitem>

and add this to the cfgrid
<cfgrid name="gridEmployees" query="employees" colheaderbold="yes" rowheaders="no" onchange="_root.demo()" >
    <cfgridcolumn name="emp_Birthdate" display="no" mask="dd-mmm-yyyy">

by: CDL2Posted on 2006-02-07 at 15:00:44ID: 15897758

"script" does not appear to be a valid type for <cfformitem>.

I am getting the error:  "Attribute validation error for tag CFFORMITEM.
The value of the attribute TYPE, which is currently "script", must be one of the values: HRULE,HTML,TEXT,VRULE,SPACER.  "

CFDevHead,

Here's a suggestion, stay clear of the flash grid. For the following reasons:

1. It's too inflexible
2. It is buggy and not commercial quality
3. It does weird things to dates.

Regards
Plucka

Are you still working on this?

by: CDL2Posted on 2006-02-08 at 14:00:57ID: 15907263

Yes, I'm still working on this.  I got stuck in meetings all morning.

I will check to make sure that I have all the current updates.

Do most people agree that cfgrid is not a good approach?  Does that mean I should use frames and develop my own grid and detail?

by: CFDevHeadPosted on 2006-02-08 at 14:04:55ID: 15907307

I use flash grid and I love it. Also my boss loves it.

by: CDL2Posted on 2006-02-08 at 14:40:04ID: 15907692

Okay.  I'll keep trying to make it work.  I'd like to learn how to use it anyway.

I'm downloading the 7.0.1 updates now.  I'll see if that fixes my type="script" problem.

We used it in a big production release of software, and ended up rolling it back and going to a DHTML grid.

We had to this when we found that dates in the grid, applied timezones to different coutries, so depending on what country you were in, you would see different data, how nice.

Not to mention people, didn't like the speed, have a look at

http://www.activewidgets.com/

Very nice DHTML grid, much quicker and better.

I applied the CFMX7 7.0.1 update and I no longer get an error on the cfformitem type = "script", but that approach didn't do anything for my dateformat issue.

The suggestion to put the date fields in as a cfgridcolumn with a date mask and a display=no did seem to give me the date format in the detail, BUT...........  the column displays in the grid even though the display=no attribute is set.  Even more interesting, if there is more than one display=no cfgridcolumn, they all display in the same column and the data for the fields overlays each other.

Can you post the code for your cfgrid?

by: CDL2Posted on 2006-02-09 at 10:52:18ID: 15915418

<!---  Display data grid  --->
<cfform format="flash" action="formdump.cfm" skin="haloblue">

      <!---  Data grid  --->
      <cfgrid name="gridEmployees" query="employees" colheaderbold="yes" rowheaders="no">
            <!---  Don't show all columns  (show selected columns)  --->
            <cfgridcolumn name="emp_LastName" header="Last Name" width="150">
            <cfgridcolumn name="emp_FirstName" header="First Name" width="150">
                  <cfgridcolumn name="emp_Birthdate" display="no" mask="dd-mmm-yyyy">
            <cfgridcolumn name="emp_HireDate" display="no" mask="dd-mmm-yyyy">
            <cfgridcolumn name="emp_LeaveDate" display="no" mask="dd-mmm-yyyy">
      </cfgrid>

The data for Birthdate, HireDate, and LeaveDate all shows up in the same column, and actually overlaying each other.

by: CFDevHeadPosted on 2006-02-09 at 11:58:27ID: 15915987

Its because the width of the grid is bigger than the two columns
<cfgridcolumn name="emp_LastName" header="Last Name" width="150">
<cfgridcolumn name="emp_FirstName" header="First Name" width="150">

I would try removing the width from the last column that you want to show. Like so

<cfgridcolumn name="emp_LastName" header="Last Name" width="150">
<cfgridcolumn name="emp_FirstName" header="First Name">

by: CDL2Posted on 2006-02-09 at 12:40:49ID: 15916450

That worked.  I now have the date fields formatted as I wanted.  I don't like the last column of the grid being so wide, but that's a separate issue.

Thanks for your help!!!
