The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How do I query a database to create a new user ID on the fly

Asked by CementTruck in ColdFusion Application Server

I am creating a request page that is going to have a little bit of intelligence built in. This page is going to be a .CFM page, and managers will use it to request a new userID be created for a new employee.

This is how I want it to work:

1) Manager goes to page and types in First Name and Last Name of new user(i.e. Joe Smith).
2) After page is submitted, it queries the existing user database and looks for J_Smith (using the first letter of the first name). If the database has a John Smith, and J_Smith is already taken, I want the page to try again, this time looking for JO_Smith.. Since John and Joe both start with the same 2 letters I want the page to try again. Sooner or later the page will find that JOE_Smith is the way to go.
3) The page then completes the submit request and shows the manager that JOE_Smith will be the userID for the new user.

At this point I'm thinking I need multiple elseif's with queries in each elseif using "like" in an incrementing fashion.

I think this is considered parsing, but I'm not sure. If anyone can help point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.
