Question

Unable to update the NT registry. Variable DRIVERPATH is undefined

Asked by: sulzener

I am trying to configure a Microsoft Access data source on Vista 64-bit with ColdFusion 8.0.1.  Get this error each time: "Unable to update the NT registry. Variable DRIVERPATH is undefined"
Found many people asking this question, but not much help.  This link seemed to be the best help, but did not work for me (http://www.webmasterkb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/cold-fusion/14625/Variable-DRIVERPATH-is-undefined).  I tried adding  a "Driver" string containing "C:\WINDOWS\System32\odbcjt32.dll" to the this reg key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBC.INI\<my data source>
Also tried  "C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\odbcjt32.dll" as the string value.  Any suggestions would help.  I'd really like to use my Vista box to develop with.

Guessing here --

Find the userid that your cold fusion/asp/ whatever runs under.
(or conversely -- breaking standardized security use everyone or Authenticated Users)

Then go into regedit, Drill down until you find the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC key and then right-click --> Properties --> Security tab and give full permission to that user id.

Instead of Properties, it said Permissions.  I still tried it and it didn't work.  Still need help!!!

What if you right-click My Computer --> Properties --> Advanced Tab --> Environment Variables --> System Variables block and do a New

Add DRIVERPATH as the Variable Name and in the Value add C:\WINDOWS\System32\ and see what happens.

That didn't work either.  Thanks again.

Have you seen this:

    Hi Ben,

Are you using "Microsoft Access with Unicode" as the driver? This worked just fine for me, outside of that I'm sorry to say I won't be of much help as I primarily use SQL Server.

jimpen, I looked for that to try as I have seen it in earlier CF installs.  But in CF8, it only shows Microsoft Access.  Any clue how I can get the driver "with Unicode" to show in the available Driver list?

I thought this might be it, but it still didn't work.  Could it be that I am on 64-bit machine?  When I look at the Drivers listed in Adminstrative Tools/Data Sources, the only driver list is SQL Server.  On my WinXP box, I have a boatload of drivers listed there.

I do not see that folder on my box.  I see c:\windows\sysWOW64\

You're looking for the driver list. c:\windows\sysWOW64\ODBCAD32.exe

by: sulzenerPosted on 2008-11-26 at 09:34:33ID: 23043948

Sorry for the delay:  the command shows several drivers.  The Access drivers are:
Driver do Microsoft Access (*.mdb)
Microsoft Access dBASE (*.dbf)
Microsoft Access Driver (*mdb)
Microsoft Access Driver (*mdb, *accdb)
Microsoft Access Paradox Driver (*db)
Microsoft Access Text Driver (*txt, *csv)
Microsoft Access Teiber (*mdb)

Try using the Microsoft Access Driver (*mdb, *accdb) and see what happens.

Okay, when I create a System DSN using "c:\windows\sysWOW64\ODBCAD32.exe", it does not appear in the CF Admin Data Sources.

I am giving up on this since it appears there is no Microsoft Access connection when using Vista Ultimate 64-bit.  I will award the points for effort.

This worked for me on a 64bit windows with 64 bit Cold Fusion 8.
http://blog.flemingonline.com/2008/03/creating-64-bit-odbc-dsn-to-work-with.html

It seems that 64bit apps don't use the hklm\software\wow6432\odbc subkey and the registry entries for hklm\software\odbc don't get added when the office system drivers are installed.
