Question

DNS Server

Asked by: ahm11

Hi,

Im currently running a webserver at home on windows 2000 advanced server and I am using someone else for my DNS managment but now I want to host my domains on my server, how is this done?

I have set up the dns server but I am not sure how to host the domains on there yet.

I am running this webserver through a ADSL Line and it is working fine. On most domain websites, it says enter Primary DNS Server NAME and secondry......what would my DNS SERVER NAME be?

Any links to tutorials related to this would be appreciated.

Thanks

YOu need to register a DNS server to get the name. I also believe that you require a domain name first as the DS is normally ns.domain.com

hope this link helps

ahm... since you have gotten hold of a server to be your DNS Server. You'll need to do the following:

1) Get your ISP to point your domain name's DNS server to your DNS server's IP address and host name. Name your dns server ns1.domain_name.com[.uk] if your domain is uses the country domain.

2) After that, you just need to enter the website's domain name to your dns and wait for all this to replicate....

actually, all you need to do is to set up your DNS (and at least one secondary) then go to your chosen net registry (eg networksolutions.com) and delegate the domain to your servers.

say your domain is 'company.com' - set up your dns servers as (say) dns1.company.com and dns2.company.com

now go to the registrar web site where you registered your domain, go to the delgation section and enter those two servers as your primary and secondary dns hosts - you will need to enter both the hostnames (eg dns1.company.com) and the public ip addresses.

the delegation process will check that your servers are both online and authoritative before it will accept the changes, so it may take a few goes to get it right if it's your first time.

but i guarantee you that this is all you need to do.  you have no need to use a third party as intermediary or temporary dns - you can start from scratch all by yourself.

cheers.
