Question

A connection with the server could not be established.

Asked by: matchbx27

I hope someone can help.  I am currently running Windows Server 2000 with IIS 5.0.  I have all of the latest patches and updates from Microsoft.   When trying to create a new ASP.NET Application I receive the following error message:

Unable to create the web project “NewWebProject”.  Unable to validate that the file path ‘c:\inetpub\wwwroot\NewWebProject’ matches the URL path ‘http://localhost/NewWebProject’.  A connection with the server could not be established.

I receive the same error message when trying to load an existing web project.

I have installed the PortalVBVS Starter Kit Application.  The web site can be access using the URL ‘http://localhost/PortalVBVS/DesktopDefault.aspx’, however when I try to open the source code using the short cut provided I receive the following error message:

The web server reported the following error when attempting to create or open the web project located at the following URL:  ‘http://localhost/portalvbvs‘.  ‘A connection with the server could not be established.’

I do believe this is a rights / permissions issue, however I can’t seem to get the right combination to make everything work properly.

Hello matchbx27

Let's see how can i help.

*** 1. First error : Unable to create the web project “NewWebProject” ***

The Internet Information Services (IIS) computer you are attempting to contact is not running or the network connection has been interrupted. Restart IIS or re-establish connection and attempt to create the new project.

Also please check IIS configuration, because i think that this problem came from a wrong folder linking.

Your second error is related to first.

What you need to do :
1. check IIS configuration
2. check absolutly all that means web location, i mean everything that put you to tell where your web folder is located etc. I think you got it.
3. If 1 and 2 don't work and you are sure you did all you could, reinstall IIS, also maybe you will want to install latest version, 6.0 i think.

Yours,
   FaithRaven

These error messages persisted even after uninstalling FrontPage Server Extensions 2002, IIS, frontPage 2002, WebFolders (webfldr.exe), and deleting the C:\inetput folder.

Next I reinstalling the above software including updating all Office Software using MS Office Update site.

Then I reinstalled / repaired Visual Studio 2002, the dot net framework 1.0 and 1.1.

I also reregistered the asp.net isapi dll's (aspnet_isapi.dll) for the dot net framework 1.0 and 1.1.

I also ran the "aspnet_regiis.exe -i" program for the dot net framework 1.0 and 1.1.

Also I can run web applications.  If I type in the url to the Portal Application, I can run the app (IIS will process the requests).  It is only when I try to access the source code that I receive error messages.

FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 usually don't help. however, when you reinstalled all this programs did you set the corect permissions, for to do this please check their documentation.

Also check your firewall settings, and tell your ISP about  this, maybe they have an already known solution.

Yours,
   FaithRaven

Found this on http://forums.aspfree.com/t13482/se894cfdcd13bae38adb11c036dc1d474.html:

"Make sure the ASPNET User account has List & Execute, Read etc.. access to the /inetpub/wwwroot directory and possibly all subordinate directories. The installation of the .NET framework generates this user, but omits to assign any permissions."

I get the same error but I'm using Personal Web Server.  I can view an .aspx file with no problem http://localhost/webform1.aspx, but cannot create a new project, and see exactly the same error message.

I don't think what has been posted will fix the problem.

A lot of information points to Zone alarm and firewall.  Microsoft says to uninstall the firwall all together, hmmm.

Also may get this:

SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft FrontPage 2000, when you attempt to publish a Web to the Internet by clicking Publish Web on the File menu, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Operation requires 32-bit tcp/ip networking when publishing.
-or-

Accessing HTTP servers requires 32-bit TCP/IP networking, which is not installed or may be misconfigured.
CAUSE
This behavior may occur if you installed the Zone Alarm firewall software on your computer.

RESOLUTION
Remove your firewall software, and then republish your Web to the Internet.

I if remember correctly it was the firewall.  I'm using Outpost and sometimes it will start blocking an application even though the application is not in the list of blocked applications.  This has happened to me several times.  I guess I had a brain fart and forgot to shutdown outpost down before continuing to troubleshoot.

Thanks for the info alorentz, I'll give you credit even though the problem has already been solved.

Thank you!  Appreciate it! Now I just have to decide if I want to get rid of my firewall too! :)

To matchbx27:

I have the same problem as you had. You mentioned that you have solved the problem. Could you please share with us how did you do it? I have done everything suggested on this web site, and it still does not work.

by: matchbx27Posted on 2004-09-27 at 04:08:54ID: 12159003

At the time I was using Outpost's free firewall.  Sometimes it would block an application even though it was listed as an allowed application.  I shutdown the firewall and everything worked correctly.  I have since switch to sygate's personal firewall.

hope that helps.

This seems to be the most likely solution for everyone having this problem.

Set your connection option to bypass proxy for local addresses...
In VS.NET 2003, from the Tools menu, select Options.
Under the Projects node, select Web Settings.
Click Connection Settings in the Options dialog box.
In the Internet Properties dialog box, select the Connections tab and click LAN Settings.
In the LAN Settings dialog box, select Bypass proxy server for local addresses.
If the option is grayed out, select Use a Proxy Server... setting and leave the address and port fields blank.
Click OK to close all open dialog boxes.

k2Jeff - your solution worked for my issue...glad I found your post!  I was setting up MediaWiki on Win2000 Advanced Server, and these settings enabled PHP to talk to MySQL.  Thanks!
