The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

FTP authentication

Asked by adamdrayer in Microsoft IIS Web Server

I am trying to setup an FTP server for a company to send us files.  I set it up correctly, and now from any computer I can type ftp://x.x.x.x/ or ftp://ftp1.mycompany.com/ into IE and send/receive files.

When this company asked me for login information, I told them I had made it anonymous so they wouldn't have to worry about it.  The files were suppossed to be transfered overnight but never got here

The FTP log looked like this:

#Software: Microsoft Internet Information Services 5.0
#Version: 1.0
#Date: 2004-07-15 06:25:43
#Fields: time c-ip cs-method cs-uri-stem sc-status
06:25:43 64.95.24.244 [14]USER widgetftp 331
06:25:43 64.95.24.244 [14]PASS - 530
06:25:43 64.95.24.244 [14]QUIT - 530

This made me think that perhaps the fact that they are trying to login as widgetftp is the problem.  I tried opening up ftp from a dos prompt, and it seems to login anonymously, you can't leave username blank, you have to type "anonymous" and put a valid email address in for password.

Is there anyway I can allow anybody whether they have blank usernames and passwords into my ftp?  the ftp is only temporary and is solely for the purpose of this particular file transfer..

Is there anyway I can add widgetftp as a user?  when trying to open the ftp site from DOS, I cannot even use my administration or user accounts. Btw, I do not have the ftp site setup to ONLY allow anonymous access.

thanks for all your help.  Oh and it's W2k SP4 patched all the way.
