Problem with IIS 5.1 Directory Security

My workstation is a member of a domain. I installed IIS 5.1 and set up a webpage on it just for testing purpose. But when I go to other website, IE will pop up a window and asks for a username and password.  I have anonymous access and window integrated authentication enabled.

Can anyone explain what went wrong?

What are your NTFS permissions on the folder your site is housed in?

the IUSR_computername account has  read, read & excute and list folder content permissions. I can view the webpages I set up . The problem is when I go to website like Experts-exchange.com, IE asks for username and password.

IE's behavior when browsing other sitres has *nothing* to do with IIS configuration on your workstation.

When you are being prompted to access othjer sites are you logged on with your Domain credentials or are you logged in as a Local account on the workstation?

Best guess is that there is an authenticating proxy between you and the Internet that is asking for credentials before it lets you out to the Internet.

I logged in with my domain account.

If I uncheck "window integration" in IIS, then IE stops asking for credentials, but http://localhost no longer works, the error is : HTTP 401.1 - Unauthorized: Logon Failed

ok, but when you try to access your own web site you get asked for authentication?

did you enable 'allow anonymous connections' in IIS?

Yes I did. When I access http://localhost, it gives error message:

You are not authorized to view this page
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied.

browse to the location of the web root in windows explorer (not internet explorer) and right click on the folder, select 'security' and make sure that the anonymous user (default is 'IUSR_<computername>') has at least read/execute rights.

the permission is already set up. Still not working.

Does the problem has something to do with Domain policy?
