Question

Upgrade Xp Pro to IIS 6

Asked by: dba123

Is it possible to just straight up upgrade my XP Pro IIS to version 6 or is that with just Server 2003?

the problem is, when I try to install IIS on my XP Pro, there are a few files it can't find, ones that are directly related to IIS 6 such as adsutil.vbs that can't be found on the XP SP2 CD nor the XP Pro CD.  For some reason it keeps asking me for these few files....usually you just need to pop in the XP Pro CD or SP 2 but for some reason at work, the images here, when I try to install IIS it always can't find that file and a couple of others.  I end up grabbing adsutil.vbs off a server of ours and I'm not even sure that's safe or the right version of this file.

I just want to update to IIS 6 on my XP Pro client to possible get around this?

other files that can't be found are seo.dll, smtpadm.dll, rwnh.dll

I have to pull them from our servers...somehow this doesn't feel right to me.  I don't have this problem when trying to install IIS on my home XP Pro machines....just here on these for some reason. Usually at home I just pop in whatever CD it asks during the IIS install and it works fine (it usually asks for the XP Pro and SP2 CD).

IIS6 cannot be installed on XP.  It's only for Windows 2003.

well, let's just say I can't find those files on any of the XP Pro or XP SP2 cds our network guys gave me.  So I'm having to get them from win2003 servers of ours by doing a search then copy them locally and use them on my XP client during the IIS 5.x install on my XP Pro

dba123,

Like thernlund mentioned, IIS6 is built into Windows 2003 and you cannot upgrade IIS on XP to that version.  As a matter of fact, IIS cannot be "upgraded" to any version on any Windows machine.  IIS has been a built in service with every OS that has it.  Never as an independant server that you can install or upgrade.

That being said, I'd suggest you get those files from your XP Pro machine rather than from the Windows 2003 machine.  They're different versions most likely.  I agree it's weird how you cannot find those files on your Windows XP PRO CD (not on the SP CD), but oh well.  You're doing the right thing by copying them from another machine, but you should just do it from a Win XP Pro machine not Win2k3.

Good luck!
JM

Actually IIS 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 were ll add-ons to the Windows NT operating system - none were considered a part of the OS and it definately was upgradable.

Additionally, Windows XP 64-Bit comes with IIS 6.0 instead of 5.1.

But I digress.....

The real issue here isn't that you need to upgrade to IIS 6, you are simply trying to install IIS 5.1 on Windows XP Professional with SP2 installed and it keeps asking for the SP2 CD saying that it can't find certain files.

This is a known issue.

You will need to contact Microsoft in order to receive the hotfix mentioned in the article.
