Question

Coldfusion 5.0 does not work with IIS 6.0..Please help..500 points.

Asked by: LubomirMasar

Experts,

I installed Coldfusion 5.0 on my Win XP Pro machine. I already had IIS 6.0 and .NET framework installed.

CF installation went all right. I specified IIS as the web server. But I am unable to serve any CFM pages..How can I identify what the problem is?

Looked at the Default website property. It has both CFIDE and CDOCS. The application name is setup corectly.

My localhost is 120.0.0.0. When I do http://localhost/innovation/index.cfm it says "The page cannot be displayed". Changed localhost to IP number, still no luck.

In application Configuration mappings of website, I made sure CFM and DBM are pointing to c:/CFusion/bin/iscf.dll.

So what is still the problem? looking forward to answers from experts..

Thanks, LM

couple things..

ensure CFservice is running (administrative tools -> services-> Cf Application server

iis settings for default site

You may need to set application protection to Low (iis process)

set default document is set to index.cfm

by: gdemariaPosted on 2007-02-13 at 18:40:47ID: 18528177

Also try doing a simple .html file to ensure your IIS is working and is pointing to the same folder.

Create this file with no Coldfusion and see if it will display...

   http://localhost/innovation/index.html

If not, check IIS settings to ensure you have a web site pointing to that folder.

If you are actually running IIS 6.0 on Windows XP you must be running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.  I am not sure that ColdFusion is 64bit compatible and may simply not work.

If you are not running x64 then you actually have IIS 5.1 installed and the situation may be more hopeful.

Which version of IIS are you running?

Sidfishes,

Made sure CF service is running..Set protection to Low IIS process..
gdemaria, I created a simple index.html on the folder and ran  http://localhost/innovation/index.html
as you suggested. Works fine! So IIS is identifying virtual directory and serving pages correctly..

Dave, I confirmed that I have IIS 5.1 installed. So my original assumption was wrong..sorry..

When I try  http://localhost/innovation/index.cfm I am still getting "The page cannot be displayed" error..

Thanks, LM

then you need to make sure .cfm files are used in the properties of iis.

go to document properties, and make sure it can find index.cfm

then delete index.html

and just try to go to http://localhost/innovation/

also one thing you said above confuses me, how can your local host be 120.0.0.0

The default is 127.0.0.1

Also win xp pro has some issues with iis, in terms of multi-home sites, so in case you want to run multiple sites.

also i would check if you can access cfide admin area first, and make sure that works fully before worrying about issues with your own folder.

good luck

Crosenblum,

I was wrong about localhost IP..It is 127.0.0.1. sorry about that..
I did not understand what you meant by
<<
then you need to make sure .cfm files are used in the properties of iis.
go to document properties, and make sure it can find index.cfm
then delete index.html
and just try to go to http://localhost/innovation/
>>

Can u please explain more? Thanks,

I tried
http://localhost/Cfide/administrator/index.cfm
and it is giving me the same The page cannot be displayed error..

by: crosenblumPosted on 2007-02-14 at 08:05:37ID: 18532386

sure...

go to iis
go to default documents
make sure index.cfm is in the list

secondly i also wanted you to check if you can access your cfadmin pages.

That's a better indicator of a good coldfusion install than anything else.

by: LubomirMasarPosted on 2007-02-14 at 08:06:22ID: 18532395

Could this be a permission issue? Do I need to give full access to any CF specific user account? I am very new to CF..

by: SidFishesPosted on 2007-02-14 at 08:10:32ID: 18532431

have you set up "innovation" as a virtual directory?

iis mmc right click on default website -> new  -> virtual directory

follow the wizard..

by: SidFishesPosted on 2007-02-14 at 08:11:46ID: 18532445

for this address

http://localhost/innovation/index.cfm

the alias of the virtual directory would be "innovation"

by: LubomirMasarPosted on 2007-02-14 at 08:18:55ID: 18532516

Yes, I have setup virtual directory, called Innovation. After that I placed a simple file index.html on the virtual directory and ran http://localhost/innovation/index.html, it worked fine..

So IIS and the virtual directory is setup correctly..It is the link between CF and IIS that is broken right?

Any special user permissions needed for CF to work? Who needs permissions on the innovation folder?

by: crosenblumPosted on 2007-02-14 at 08:19:05ID: 18532517

This should not be a security issue, just a matter whether:

1. Coldfusion was installed correctly
2. IIS is setup correctly to work with coldfusion

That's all.

by: gdemariaPosted on 2007-02-14 at 08:21:27ID: 18532540

Go into IIS, right click the properties of your web site
and click on the "Home Directory" tab.

Then click on the "Configuration" button.

Scroll down the list looking for Coldfusion extensions
You should see a handful that look something like this (look particularly for .cfm)
The path may be a bit different from this.  If you see it, you could verify that the path is correct and the file is found at the location specified.

    .cfm    C:\CFusionMX7\runtime\lib\wsconfig1\jrun.dll   [all]
    .cfc     C:\CFusionMX7\runtime\lib\wsconfig1\jrun.dll   [all]

by: LubomirMasarPosted on 2007-02-14 at 08:23:24ID: 18532559

Crosen, thanks..

I beleive CF was installed correctly..I did it twice already..I correctly specified IIS as the web service provider during install. The CF service running normally too..Yes. It is a real mystery now for me..

by: LubomirMasarPosted on 2007-02-14 at 08:28:11ID: 18532599

gdemaria,

I looked as u said..
CFM is there in the list. Pointing to c:/cfusion/bin/iscf.dll
I went to that folder and made sure this dll is there.

I do not see a CFC in the list. I am not using CF MX version, I have only version 5.0.
I do have a .DBM in the list, again pointing to c:/cfusion/bin/iscf.dll

Do I really need to add CFC also? But I dont have any cfc extension files in the project..

by: LubomirMasarPosted on 2007-02-14 at 09:04:54ID: 18532979

In another question on ExEx here, I saw this
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Web_Servers/ColdFusion/Q_21192362.html?sfQueryTermInfo=1+cfide

There the final solution was
I added a new website called "cfide administrator", made its IP address 127.0.0.1, and now it works!

I dont understand how to do this for me..How can I list IP address 127.0.0.1 to CFIDE?

by: gdemariaPosted on 2007-02-14 at 09:19:57ID: 18533139

 > Do I really need to add CFC also? But I dont have any cfc extension files in the project..
No, cfc's were not available in CF 5

by: SidFishesPosted on 2007-02-14 at 09:20:14ID: 18533149

don't think thats the issue

you don't need a cfc extension for cf5

You could try turning off "friendly error messages" in IE and it may give you a better error message to track down the error

is this to be a development server?

if so are you developing for a cf5 production server?

if not I'd recommend just downloading the newest version (7.1 i think) and use it dev mode

by: SidFishesPosted on 2007-02-14 at 09:25:39ID: 18533192

one other thing to try

check default website properties Execute permissions is set to Scripts and executables

by: LubomirMasarPosted on 2007-02-14 at 09:42:18ID: 18533380

<< You could try turning off "friendly error messages" in IE and it may give you a better error message to track down the error

My company has disabled this option in all browsers..Can't go to browser's advanced tab and make any change..

This is a development server. I am trying to make changes to CFM pages and test against local CF server. I have always used this machine for ASP .Net development so far. This is the first time I am trying to run ColdFusion pages..

Yes, I gave Scripts and Executables permission..Made no difference :(

I have Windows XP Pro machine..Does Coldfusion+IIS combination work on this machine at all? Any known incomaptibility problems?

by: crosenblumPosted on 2007-02-14 at 10:01:02ID: 18533608

trust me, i have cf and winxp pro at home. It works fine.

There are issues with winxp pro, but not with coldfusion.

first, can you access the cfadmin page? that is the main coldfusion administrator page.

http://127.0.0.1/cfide/administrator that should take you the coldfusion administration page.

First let's make sure you can access that. If you can and it works fine, then coldfusion is installed fine on your machine.

The goal is to make you can view cfml pages on your server.

Then to see if this is a configuration issue with the virutal direction that you created.

try accessing your virtual directory using the ip address instead of just localhost
sometimes there may be issues with dns alias's.

But let's keep this simple, too many ways this can segue into 5 million conversations, instead of just an issue with iis and coldfusion.

Let's keep going.

by: LubomirMasarPosted on 2007-02-14 at 10:11:03ID: 18533713

I will do as uou suggetsed Crosen..In the meantime, one of my admin staff suggested to do this:

You have to add a web service extension called ColdFusion and point it to ..\cfusion\bin\iscf.dll file and allow it..

Do you know how I can add a web service extension in IIS 5.1?

by: SidFishesPosted on 2007-02-14 at 10:17:50ID: 18533774

this is how

http://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_18689

I assumed you'd already done that since you said "CFM is there in the list. Pointing to c:/cfusion/bin/iscf.dll"

by: LubomirMasarPosted on 2007-02-14 at 10:25:22ID: 18533843

Crosenblum,
http://127.0.0.1/cfide/administrator that should take you the coldfusion administration page.

Which page in cfide/admininstrator is that? Index.cfm?

by: LubomirMasarPosted on 2007-02-14 at 10:37:19ID: 18533945

Crosenblum,
I tried http://127.0.0.1/cfide/administrator/ and I still get the same error.
In fact my browser replaces this with http://127.0.0.1/cfide/administrator/index.cfm -Is that okay?

So I guess the first part of your test is failing..Coldfusion is not installed correctly??

by: SidFishesPosted on 2007-02-14 at 11:03:18ID: 18534208

sounds like iis is set up mostly correctly... it's using your default document (index.cfm)

you may want to try a complete uninstall, registry clean and clean up any left over files in c:\cfusion

I use http://www.tweaknow.com/RegCleaner.html

by: crosenblumPosted on 2007-02-14 at 12:48:12ID: 18535285

my guess is more along with iis being setup incorrectly.

I'd like you to go to iis, and go to properties of the virtual directory you created...

then go to default documents that iis allows, and make sure index.cfm is one of them.

That makes sure that index.cfm will be looked up, if you do not put a filename in the url.

Let's try that first. And if still not works, review your coldfusion installation...

by: SidFishesPosted on 2007-02-14 at 12:57:50ID: 18535377

default doc must be set up as Lubomir stated typing in

http://127.0.0.1/cfide/administrator/
produces
http://127.0.0.1/cfide/administrator/index.cfm

which could only happen with a default doc set to index.cfm

by: LubomirMasarPosted on 2007-02-14 at 14:08:40ID: 18536069

Yes, the default document is setup correctly..

It seems like IIS is not passing the CFM file to CF server for processing..I have a CF performance monitor running..and I dont see any activity in it when I submit the page..

by: SidFishesPosted on 2007-02-14 at 14:59:12ID: 18536465

some really basic stuff which probably should have been said way up there ^

Does your IT dept have any GPO's which may be causing this to fail

do you have client firewall software installed ? check logs.

check event logs on the local machine (especially security if you have access)

did you have AV software running when you installed? if so, may have hosed install.

if these don't turn up any clues, i'd do a clean install..

(this shouldn't be that difficult...it's not even this difficult to set up on on linux... :)

Seems like I have a security related problem in regard to Coldfusion+IIS connection..
Since my tasks are pretty urgent I am now thinking about taking a different approach..

I want to write a COM+ component which will do all the tasks that I have to do (connecting to DB, inserting records etc..) and then invoke this component from CF page to do the job.

So I dont really need to setup CF at all..

I am going to award points here and close this Question. I will open a new one for CF/COM connection..

Thanks all for your tremendous help and support..

LM
