Question

Cannot Deploy any new Reports to my SQL Reporting Services Server. Permissions Thing?

Asked by: oxford_geeks

Hi I'm trying to deploy a report onto my SQL Reporting Services Server (which already has several reports running on it.  Server 2003 R2 SP2
SQL 2000 SP3a
SRS 2000 SP2
When I hit deploy in VS 2003 I get the following error message:
The permissions granted to user 'OXFORD1\IUSR_OXFORD1' are insufficient for performing this operation.
So I have a trawl through exchange experts and try and find some inspiration.
I added IUSR and IWAM user accounts to the Reports Virtual Server Permissions
Did an IISRESET
Still no joy
When I go directly onto the server and type in http://localhost/reports
I get my report manager page come up.  I can see my previously published reports.
What I CAN'T see is the SITE Settings link....  What Have I done?

You need to grant the user permission in the folder you are publishing to.  There is a default role called Content Manager. Make your user has this role in the appropriate folder.
Site Settings > Configure item-level role definititions > Content Manager

If you can't see Site Settings then that user you are logged in, as it doesn't have permission to make system changes in Report Manager.  Use an account that does, or get your user account added so that you can.

Thanks for trying to help.
As i mentioned above, I can't see the SiteSettings Link so its kind of a chicken before the egg thing,
I tried logging on as domain administrator STILL no joy,
I tried logging on as local administrator NO JOY
I tried reinstalling SRS SP2 reboot server NO JOY
I think I'm going to get the big hammer out Uninstall and then Re-Install
Has anyone ever had any JOY twiddling the Webconfig file in the ReportManager Directory?

Is the user part of the Administrator group on the server where RS is installed?
Is the Report Server virtual directory set to allow anonymous access in the IIS?  If so try disabling this option.

by: oxford_geeksPosted on 2007-05-17 at 04:11:20ID: 19107209

Yes it was set to anonymous access, I set it to use windows authentication
did an IISRESet
went to report manager it asked me to authenticate (as expected) so I did,
same difference
NO JOY.

Did you restart the reportserver service after making these changes?
From what you have been saying it really sounds like an issue with the IIS account.  Did this all work ok before? Has there been any updates on the server that has resulted in this being an issue?

by: oxford_geeksPosted on 2007-05-17 at 04:40:27ID: 19107336

I have restarted the service, still not happening.  I agree it sounds like an issue with IIS and the RS talking to each other.  I've just sent the companywide email telling them I'm going to bounce the server in 20 Minutes.  Reinstalling better work or I'm gonna be snookered.  Thank you for your helpful suggestions none the less.

No problem.  Good luck with the re-install. Never a nice option to have to revert to!

by: oxford_geeksPosted on 2007-05-17 at 06:13:03ID: 19107857

IT worked.....PHEW.  Only 15 minutes of downtime and people actually had to take a lunch today.  back on track now.  The un-install is less than clean.  You have to manually delete Directories, Databases, and Virtual Directories as well.
Thanks again for you help Simon.
