This is running on Windows 2003 Standard.
How do I get it to automatically add /default.aspx?

In your Internet Information Settings for your sharepoint site add default.aspx to the default loading pages. This can be achieved by rightclicking on your SharePoint site in IIS, selecting properties. Then go to the documents tab, make sure that Enable default documents is checked and that default.aspx is in that list.
