Question

creating IIS virtual roots failed during installation of ASP .Net code

Asked by: yaronusa

I got a CD from a book, and I want to install the code examples, so I run an .msi file, and towards the very end of the installation, it attempts to do this: "Creating IIS Virtual Roots..." and then it stops, and rolls back the whole installation, and then spits out this error message:

"The wizard was interrupted before Microsoft ASP .NET 3.5 Step by Step could be completely installed.
Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again."

I tried changing the msmapi32.dll to msmapi32_old.dll, and ndew msmapi32.dll was installed; I tried deleting the c:\program files\common files\installshield\drivers folder also; I tried running fixmapi.exe.

Any help would be truly appreciated, as I really don't know much about ASP or IIS.

My IIS version is 7.0.60000.16386. I am trying to instal the code examples from a book called "Microsoft ASP.Net 3.5 Step by Step"

THANKS FOR ANYONE TRYING TO HELP!!

I'll ask the obvious.  Did you install the .NET 3.5 runtime on your computer?

Thank you for that. I have .Net 3.0, I thought Vista came with 3.5... maybe it does now I guess. I am downloading and installing 3.5 as I write this. I'll get back here soon, thanks!

Tip: SP1 for .NET 3.5 has a bug that blocks accessing local loopback web page access.  This killed some web services on our Sharepoint farm.  The solution is to add the DWORD key 'DisableLoopbackCheck=1' to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

If you are doing development that setting might be an issue.

Apparently, I seem to already have .net 3.5 framework, and I think it is SP2. In programs installed, I "repaired" .net 3.5 framework.

To make sure I have it, I ran the following tests:

In Internet Explorer Browser address bar, I typed: javascript:alert(navigator.userAgent)
The result was:
Windows NT 6.0; SLCC1; .Net CLR 2.0.50727;
Media Center PC 5.0; InfoPath.2;
.Net CLR 3.0.30618; .Net CLR 3.5.30729

In the registry, in folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v3.5
I found Version to have the value of 3.5.30729.01

When I run ASoft .Net Version Detector 2007 it reports I have the following installed

.NET FW 2.0 SP 2
.NET FW 3.0 SP 2
.NET FW 3.5 SP 2

Since I have SP2, should I add to the registry your suggestion about DisableLoopbackCheck=1?

Installing the IIS6 configuration compatibility component on IIS7 - since most setup technologies use IIS6 configuration APIs to configure IIS - fixed my problem.

Here's what I did:

In the Control Panel->Programs->Add/Remove Windows Features, I scrolled down to Internet Information Services->Web Management Tools->IIS 6 Management Compatibility. This folder was checked, but non of the folders within it were checked, so I checked all of them, and restarted the computer.
Now I was able to install the example code without any problems.

SP2 is for the host operating system.  .NET 3.5 has it's own specific SP1.
