Question

Log Parser 2.2 not creating logs. Help diagnose what I am missing

Asked by: gbzhhu

I am trying to diagnose a problem BadRequest Connection_dropped from IIS.  This is occuring for my mobile devices accessing my web service.  I nistalled log parser 2.2 and registered the dll.  I did the following setup

Got into command prompt
    cd\
    cd Inetpub\AdminScripts

Configure the TraceUriPrefix Metabase Property for the URL you want to trace.
        adsutil.vbs set w3svc/1613811946/TraceUriPrefix "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\myapp\Mobile\MobileSvc.asmx"

START TRACE
logman start CMobile -pf "C:\Hassan\CMobile_IIS_Trace\provider.txt" -ets

DUMP TRACE
       CD C:\Program Files\Log Parser 2.2\Samples\Scripts
      dumptracereqs CMobile > CMobileLog.txt

SELECT ALL LOG DATA
       CD C:\Program Files\Log Parser 2.2
      LogParser.exe "SELECT * FROM Samples\Scripts\CMobile.etl"

Message from running command is
Task aborted.
Cannot open <from-entity>: Cannot find any file matching
  "Samples\Scripts\CentaurMobile.etl"

Statistics:
-----------
Elements processed: 0
Elements output:    0
Execution time:     0.05 seconds

The CMobile wasnt created (I know that there are activities in my app - web service being called etc).  My provider file is like this

"IIS: WWW Server" UseUrlFilter 5

Anyone know what I am missing?

LogParser doesn't create logs, it's parses ones that already exist.  Can you attach the file?

tedbilly,

Thanks for your comment.  Apologies, I was talking rubbish.  I was looking at the wrong folder for the etl file.  Now I found it.  It seems to be catching all server traffic but I only want traffic for a specific web service.  I reconfigured and waiting for data now.

I am using this event logging to troubleshoot a web service but I am not sure if this is the best way.  Will post again when data is available

Cheers

I can see the file created and growing.  If I do
LogParser.exe "SELECT * FROM C:\CentaurMobile.etl"

I get lots of data displayed and this is from the whole server (not the specific web service I am trying to troubleshoot)

If I do
dumptracereqs CentaurMobile > C:\Inetpub\AdminScripts\CentaurMobileLog.txt

I get an error
Error parsing query:  Select clause: Syntax error:  unknown field 'ContectID' [Record field does not exist.]

Sorry not attached file.  It is too big.  I can see a few entries from my service but no errors.  I know my service had the "connection dropped" sympton 3 times while I was capturing the log data.

Well that error sounds like it might be because you don't have a consistent number of columns for each row.

Have you tried something simple without the wildcard?  In other words "SELECT columnName FROM ..."

by: gbzhhuPosted on 2009-03-27 at 02:24:22ID: 23999085

I have no idea that I can control the number of columns returned.  They way I see I can either use dumptracereqs to get the trace into a text file which fails with the error above (so I am not specifying columns myself as such - I guess the script is doing it) The other way is to use LogParser.exe which works fine and catually has ContextId column !!!

Finally I did LogParser.exe "SELECT * FROM C:\CentaurMobile.etl" > C:\Inetpub\AdminScripts\CentaurMobileLog.txt
which got the logs into the text file (but I had to press enter a zillion times!) there must be a switch that allows me to avoid having to press enter for each page of output.

Still nothing about the errors I am looking for is reported in the logs.  I am not sure if I have configured it optimally.

Can you make any more suggestions as to how to get all responses from my web service logged.

Thanks for your assistance.  Appreciated

Have you looked at the code in dumptracereqs.js?  It's obviously using LogParser to include a column that doesn't exist in the file.  All you need to do is change the syntax for LogParser in that file.  Without a copy of the log file I cannot help you any further.

Sorry left this open far too long.  I was distracted by too many other projects.  Thank you for contributing.  Appreciated
