I am using local admin. The machine is not part of a domain. Where can I checkwhat service the app pool is running under?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI have an IIS 5.1 website setup. If I set it to Anonymous access everything works fine. However, I need/want it set to Integrated Windows Authentication. I try to access the page, it prompts me for username and password, it acts like the username/password is wrong. After 3 attempls i get the 401.1 error. I am using an administrator username and password. I know it is correct because i'm able to log into the computer with it. I have checked folder permissions. The event log has no entries. PLEASE HELP!

Are you running on XP or 2000?
If you have a computer name and you are not part of the domain, you may need to specify this if accessing it from outside, so if your computer name is IISWEBSERVER, login using IISWEBSERVER\Administrator
I think you do not have it setup correctly. The proper way of doing this is:
Enable Anonymous Access, then enable Integrated Windows Authentication, and THEN go into that root directory, and set the permissions.
So lets say my website is at c:\inetpub\www
I go to www's security settings, and I assign anyone want to have read/write/whatever, and for that anonymous user (IUSR_COMPUTERNAME usually) or for "Everyone", you can set it to deny. When IIS sees that user doesn't have access it will request a username/pass.
And don't forget to make sure those permissions are applied to all subfolders and items. The only way to make sure is to make use of the "Effective Permissions" tab under "Advanced" when in security settings.
If you are on XP, you may need to disable simple file sharing if you haven't already done so.

Are you using domain admin vs local admin? I know you said you checked folder permissions, but that's the number one cause of these types of errors.
The other thing to check is what service the app pool is running under. If it's local system switch it to network service or a service account that can query active directory. You may not be able to verify the credentials.
