Question

IIS 7 / Virtual Directory / Pdf issues

Asked by: mrsdev

Hello,

Using  Windows Server 2008 with IIS 7
After recently publishing a Visual Studio 2005 website to our web server (Windows Server 2008), I added a virtual directory to my website that contains Adobe Pdf's.  I have been unable to view these .Pdfs; I receive the following error:  HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found
The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

I have no problems viewing any of my .aspx files.  Something I noticed is that the url I am using is http://IP Address of Web Server/accidentscans/corporate/PIP031709.pdf while the physical path is C:\inetpub\wwwroot\accidentscans\corporate\PIP031709.pdf.  While the requested url is absolutely correct, the virtual directory, accidentscans, is underneath the website accident and yet I do not see it within the physical path (see more detail on error below in Code section).

I have tried a lot of different things but with no success.  Can somebody give me an idea or answer as to why I am unable to view Adobe Pdf's.

Thanks

OK, so you say that you added a virtual directory - what is the virtual directory path and what is the physical location?  can you enable directory browsing on the virtual directory and then see if you can view the virtual directory contents?

Cheers,

1.)  As stated above, the url I am attempting to access is http://IP Address of Web Server/accidentscans/corporate/PIP031709.pdf while the physical path is C:\inetpub\wwwroot\accidentscans\corporate\PIP031709.pdf.  While the requested url is absolutely correct, the virtual directory, accidentscans, is underneath the directory (website) accident and yet I do
not see it within the physical path (see more detail on error below in Code section).

2.)  After turning on Directory Browsing and attempting to view the .Pdf, I receive the following error:
An error occurred loading a configuration file: Failed to start monitoring changes to '\\Unc Name of Physical Server I have created a Virtual Directory to\corphr\accscans' because access is denied.

3.)  Permissions are correct on the virtual directory since I can access it on another web server of ours through a virtual directory with no issues.

4.)  Using the following Url, http://Ip Address of Web Server/accidentscans/corporate/pip03709.pdf, I receive the error  404 - File or directory not found (directory structure in iis is set up the same as #5)

5.)  Using the following Url, http://Ip Address of a Different Web Server/accidentscans/corporate/PIP031709.pdf, I am able to successfully view the .Pdfs within the virtual directory

Hello,

I have some addtional information:

When attempting to click on the Mime Type option, I receive the following error (also see attachment):

"There was an error while performing this operation.  Details:  Filename\\?\UNC\hrcorp\corphr\accscans\corporate\web.config  Error:  Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions.

The credentials I am using with this virtual directory are the same that I am using on the actual directory that this virtual directory resides upon.

by: mrsdevPosted on 2009-08-21 at 12:18:11ID: 25154906

I have solved this issue (with the LORD GOD'S help).  The permissions for my virtual directory needed to match those of my website.

Thanks
