The way I have been setting up users is to extend the site server side, then open the site in FrontPage and add them using the Tools--> Permissions dialog. Is there another way to do it?

Browse All TopicsI have a problem with IIS 7 that is making me a bit nervous. I have numerous websites hosted on a Windows2008 server, IIS7 and the latest FrontPage extensions. An author called me this morning saying she no longer had access to her web page. I logged in and saw that she was no longer a user on her page, but I also noticed that a completely different author from a different site was an author on her page! All of the users on this server have been set up on an Active Directory domain, and I am the only one who sets permissions. Is there something I could have done incorrectly to cause this? IIS7 and Server 2008 are new to me. Thanks.

I would probably only allow your customers to set up (sub)users that way.
These answers should be able to help me walk through the set-up. I'll try to respond quickly - but please don't try anything, otherwise you might need to do a lot of deleting, etc.
1. Yes.
2. The webs were on another server, and I used FrontPage to publish them to their new location. Copying and pasting is a disaster with FrontPage webs!
3. Yes, we are using the roles that come bundled with the extensions (Administrator, Advanced Author and Author). I don't use Contributor or Browser.
Thank you.
Fantastic! So many people just copy the sites over. You can do that, but you need to delete all the _vti_cnf and any other _vti files / folders.
First, you need to go into IIS, and check the FPSE. This should take you to a URL where you will see some information on setting up the mail server, roles, etc. The URL it should take you to http://servername:port/fpa

Go into the Frontpage web interface and look under the frontpage site that was added. Click on "Manage Roles" and check to see which roles are in there. There should be the following:
Sometimes when installing FPSE, some of these users might not have the proper permissions. Setting up these permissions before setting up the FP users, these roles need to be configured.
Then set up a FP user with the Advanced Author View. If I am remembering correctly, all your FP users (the main ones), should have the Advanced Author View role.
You might have to delete those _vti folders, but see if you can publish using the FP user / password that you just set up.
The roles should be set up first - before any FP users are setup. This provides the default roles for the FP users when they are set up.
As far as I know / remember, FP users can only be set-up through this FPSE Admin Control Panel. I am pretty sure the AD users are not compatible to (with) FPSE. You will need to set up each FP user through this FPSE Admin Control Panel.
So the admin control panel is this?
http://servername:port/fpa
I never knew about that! It's way easier than opening FrontPage each time.
I ended up placing a call to Microsoft yesterday at the request of my manager. They were quick to tell me that I needed to get in touch with Ready-to-Run software as FPSE was no longer supported and did not charge us for the incident. The engineer I spoke to strongly suggested webDAV, and also told me that Active Directory users can be used in FrontPage.
I think I will close this. Thanks a million for all your input and time...I really appreciate it.
No worries - glad I could be of help.
I know usually it's the FrontPage Forms that people really rely on. Consider asking your customers what FrontPage webbots they are still using / relying on and maybe convince them that the webbots are not that great, especially the forms - the webmaster's email is displayed in the code, making them vulnerable to people getting their email addresses.
I will admit though in this same post - FrontPage's FTP client is not that great - sometimes timing out. I always did like the publishing feature myself and relied on that until about three years ago, deciding to remove FPSE from the servers because of the lack of support and security reasons.

With FrontPage Server Extensions no longer really being supported, it is difficult to say. I know usually when you set up FrontPage users, this is done via the FPSE Admin Control Panel. Have you signed into that to see about setting up the users?
