Question

IIS 7 error HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.

Asked by: goldband

I was working on a part of my .NET 3.5 application on Server 2007, and after trying to register a module (.dll) began getting this error whenever loading a page. I tried to remove all traces of the registration of the module, but I cannot make the error go away, even after reboot.

The application log shows many entries like:" the module xxx.dll failed to load. the data is the error", as originating in the IIS-W#SVC-WP service

HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.

Hi,

That error is likely to be that the application pool is set with a user that has no access. Try setting up the permissions to network service, as well as using a separate application pool for the expecific website.

Let me know if this helps.

Rgds.

There is already a separate app pool, and the 'identity' is set to network service. However. I noticed the pool shows as 'stopped'. I restart it, which appears OK until I attempt to load a page (and get error 503), whereupon  the status changes back to to stopped.
