Question

Problems getting IE AutoConfiguration working with Proxy.pac file

Asked by: YeoLyle

I am trying to setup a proxy autoconfiguration file.  Unfortunately I have had little luck following instructions on the web.  I have the proxy working when I hard code the fields in the browser, but does not take effect if I use the proxy.pac file.  I have been trying to get a proxy.pac file to take and I have added it to the root of an internal web server and pointed the browser "AutoConfiguration" file path to that, however the proxy setting don't take.

The browser configuration path is listed as: http://home.<internaldomain>.net/proxy.pac

Below is the proxy.pac file I am using:
  function FindProxyForURL(url, host) {
     if (shExpMatch(url,"*.<domain>.net/*"))                  {return "DIRECT";}
     if (shExpMatch(url, "*.<domain2>.com:*/*"))               {return "DIRECT";}
     return "PROXY www.<domain>.com:3128; DIRECT";
  }

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks Lyle

is the <domain> reference a replacement for the actual domain in your proxy.pac file or is this supposed to be the equivalent of the wild card character?

If you look at the following examples ...
http://nscsysop.hypermart.net/proxypac.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_auto-config

Your syntax seems pretty basic and should be good.

My only other question after reviewing your config is this ...
is www.<domain>.com:<port> your actual proxy server?  This seems like an external web server reference and I would have expected something simplier for the name of an internal server.

I just noticed one other thing ...
In your examples you have domain.net in your first line
In your default settings you have domain.com ... is this correct?  Or should these 2 references to apparently the same domain have the same suffix (.com or .net)?

This did lead me to a troubleshooting option of using "File://c:/windows/proxy.pac", where I could verify that the proxy.pac file was valid.  I was then able to track the problem down to the Web server not responding with the Proxy.pac file even though the google Pactester did.

Thanks Lyle
