Question

IIS redirects to http://localhost/<folder name> after creating a CNAME

Asked by: kambala

Hi all,

This is my first post here...

I have a IIS server hosting a website. Server name is (let's say) XY.domain.com. Normally everyone access this website through http://XY.domain.com\. Please note that users should be accessing the sub directories.

Because XY is the server name (and its ugly), I thought it's better to call the IIS website's real name (let's say) ABC instead of XY. So, I created a cname entry in DNS call abc.domain.com pointing to xy.domain.com.

When I ping abc.domain.com then ping responses fine. if browse http://abc.domain.com then it works. but when http://abc.domain.com/ is browse it automatically redirects to http://localhost/ and i don't get a page.

I'm puzzled... I'm not sure where the localhost entry is coming from.. is this a dns issue or the way IIS website is configured? how can I make abc.domain.com/ work.

Many thanks in advance...

Cheers !!!

Is the URL http://abc.domain.com/ exists in your website?

If it's not, try check the IIS Site Properties > Custom Errors tab, and see if error 404 is pointing to correct URL?

Hi,

Thanks for the responses...

If I browse http://xy.domain.com/ all works fine. I mean this is a fully functional website and yes, the sub directory exist. I only need users to browse the website as http://abc.domain.com/ instead of http://xy.domain.com/.

Thanks,

Your answer does not address my question

Anyway, I gather that this is a well-known problem for several webservers with redirection.
For IIS, see here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q218180&id=KB;EN-US;Q218180

It may also help to bind IIS not to all IP addresses (i.e. "*") but only to the IP address of the NIC
