IIS 6.0 on windows 2003 server hosting multiple sites with multiple IP addresses gives port errors

I have a server, it is a VM, that is running windows 2003

I have assigned it four IP addresses, one for the server and three additional ones for three sperate sites I want to host on it

If I do an ipconfig /all I see all the assigned IP addresses
I can also ping all four IP addresses from the LAN and externally via the NAT IP

I created three websites using the wizard, assiging one IP to each site, using port 80 and 443, Each site has a host-header with the sites FQDN

I rebooted the server, and now I can only start up one site at a time.
I get the error that IIS was unable to start, another site is using the port, select and unused port.

I thought If I had each on a seperate IP address there would be no issue using the same ports

in event logs I see this W3SVC error
Cannot register the URL prefix 'https://*:443/' for site '1730160895'. The necessary network binding may already be in use. The site has been deactivated.  The data field contains the error number.

I had the same thing happen to me, but I was on server 2008. There are more issues with hostheaders on server 2008, but one of the issues was the certificate. I don't know how to create certificates, but the certificates that I was using needed to be configured correctly for multiple IP address.

If you want to use port 80 don't throw port 443 into it. Only use one for each web application.

you can use different IP addresses and assign each to each web service.  You need to add four virtual connections receiving internet traffic each.  You have to make sure that all correspond to each IP.  Please check the following screens and all the information is fictitious but just as an example to show how to configure...

btw i have over 10 in one microsoft windows 2003 server (with lots of power of course) and over 500K hits every day on each. It works great and no problems with it at all... You can have each in different ports but the whole idea is to have all with different IPs and same port but same machine right?

All your information was great, but it turns out that the solution was different for this case.

If I only had port 80 on the sites they all came up

I then had set the SSL port at 443 and then started up all the sites in order to add the SSL certificate.

Thats where I got the erro about ports in use

Apperntly, you need to instal the SSL cert prior to starting the site when using multiple sites, or they all bind to the servers default IP

Once the SSL was installed, port 443 binds to the IP and works just fine.
