Server 2008 Backup

Hey folks, here's a headscratcher i've been dealing w/ for awhile.

I got a 2008 standard edition box running hyper v. I'm trying to run server 2008 backup to an external drive, and it fails on a pretty regular basis. It worked for about a week and now it doesn't work at all. Here's the errors i get -

From Server backup - "The backup of the volume was stopped before the backup started running"
From my event logs -

applog - "Backup started at '12/9/2009 5:00:33 AM' failed as Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes with following error code '2155348001'. Please rerun backup once issue is resolved." event 521,backup

applog - "Cryptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.

Details:
AddCoreCsiFiles : BeginFileEnumeration() failed.

System Error:
Access is denied.
." CAPI2, event 512

So far what i've tried is reregistering all the dll's in the syswow64 folder for the vss services, (found that solution on the google) - recreating my backup, rebooting the server, and shaking a stick at it.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Run Check Disk Utility to make sure that there are no errors on your external hard drive.
go to command prompt and and type chkdsk /f /r let it scan if the hard drive has problems or not...then restart your computer.
