VPS Set up

Hi

I got myself cheap VPS. It only had Windows Server 2008 Web Edition installed without any extra features.

I have absolutely no experience with VPS + Any kind of administration so I'm after easy to understand and follow advice :)

So far:
1) I performed all Windows Updates.
2) I am currently installing SQL Server 2008 R2 Express edition with SSRS

What to do next?
1) I want to secure the server? Some basics....
a) I have Kaspersly license and I'm thinking it would be wise to install it? Shoud I do that? Is there any software which more appropriate?
b) Are there any settings that I should change? This is used only for websites + SQL/SSRS, there is currently nothing else going in the background.
2) How to transfer website to VPS?
a) My basic understanding is that I need to configure IIS + DNS? I noticed that IIS is not installed and I cannot find it under programs (features). Which version of IIS should I install?
b) I cannot find anything that relates to DNS in administration tools. What do I have to install to transfer my existing websites?

Many thanks in advance!
Emil

ASKER

Hi Hades666

Many thanks for the answering all my question. I have actually made it work after several days but I still have this worries in my head so still need to do it properly.

Could you clarify some of your answers for me?
Install Antivirus software
Kapersky will be fine.
--> I have Kaspersky but it is "Home" License. I've read on the internet it will not install on Window Server 2008 (Web)
--> Which anti-virus features I need? The web server is only used to display web pages, access SQL Server and SSRS + remote access and Subversion iin the near future.

Setup Firewall Ports
I will have a go with that. So far I could see that firewall is on and the only exceptions are SSRS Port ( I changed default 80 to 50k something port number)
-- I also add sql sever and sql broker to exception programs so I can connect to the server remotelly... not sure if that is a good idea.

Install IIS 7 on Web Edition- I struggled but I managed to do that.

DNS Services & SITE Transfer
I have used DynDNS.com and change my nameserver and added my website names to a text file somewhere and it now takes files from VPS. Jupi!

Backups
I need to ask them. But also do my own SQL/Web Server backups. I also need to install SubVersion as it is a pain to do any development without it.

Many thanks for your help! I know I asked a lot of questions in one post. But now that I have everything going hopefully I will be more precise.

I will play with the server tomorrow and post my new questions if any.

Regards
Emil
