Question

Identifying own proxy server

Asked by: cranium2003

hello,
when i use www.whatismyip.com to locate my ip on internet it shows some IPADDR1 but on my dialup connection i can connect to internet without using my isp's proxy server ip IPADDR2.
How can it be possible that by explicitly specifying ISP proxy ip in internet explorer i can use internet and without specifying also i can use? Then which is good way either to enter proxy ip or not in IE6 connections tab?
Also i am getting each time different local 10.X.X.X dynamic IP.
Can anybody figure out what is my network design of ISP? I am try to learn how is this possible that the proxy IP of my ISP IPADDR2 is also static IP and www.whatisip.com results IP for my internet connection is also static IP?
What i know that external IP is real IP and inter IP is private IP but here i have to pass through real ip to real ip to access internet?
What is this?

you get a 10.x.x.x IP from your ISP which is a so-called RFC IP aka private IP.
Such RFC IPs are never routed in internet, hence you either need to have a router somewher which has a real IP, most likely a dynamic one (which changes every time you login to your ISP), that's the IP you see at whatsmyip, usually.
If you you use a proxy in your browser whatsmyip will give you the IP of that proxy, and if that proxy forwards your real IP also, whatsmyIP can report that too.

sorry i didntunderstand i require detail answer. i know that within a organisation inter pcs have any private ip address so does i am getting one each time. but what about the 2 real ips in between me and internet that is one is if i specify proxy ip of my isp and another one that appears through whatismyip?

one more thing i am getting same ip address by whatismyip if i use proxy or if i do not spcify it in IE6

my whatismyip is 20x.xxx.xxx.xxx and what my ISP provided me proxy server ip is 20x.xxx.xxx.xxx and i got each time internal ip in range of 10.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
doesn't it seem both whatismyip output and my ISP proxy server address as real ip?

> my whatismyip is 20x.xxx.xxx.xxx
> my ISP provided me proxy server ip is 20x.xxx.xxx.xxx
> and i got each time internal ip in range of 10.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

what is wrong with these 3 statements?
or do you mean that whatsmyip reports 10.x.x.x?

ok can you tell me one thing
If i have applied for dialup connection to my ISP and he provides. then whenever i connect to my ISP proxy server for access internet he must have some real ip right? so is that real ip is direct/final IP which is seen on internet?
because i thought there is only one level to access Internet that is through my ISP real IP.
But in my case i am seeing another IP as real compared to what my ISP has real IP.
Can you first tell me what design is there in my case to access internet so that real IP seen through whatismyip is different than my ISP real IP?

Again one more thing
>If you you use a proxy in your browser whatsmyip will give you the IP of that proxy, and if that proxy forwards your real IP also, whatsmyIP can report that too.
In both case IP is same besides using proxy explicitly.why???

> .. access internet he must have some real ip right?
right

> so is that real ip is direct/final IP which is seen on internet?
depends, only if there is no proxy in betwwen

> .. only one level to access Internet that is through my ISP real IP.
yes

> . . in my case to access internet so that real IP seen through whatismyip is different than my ISP real IP?
either you use a proxy (for HTTP),
or your ISP NATs your IP again to outside world, but then you never see your ISP diven to the dialup device anywhere in internet.

> In both case IP is same besides using proxy explicitly.why???
how and where do you define your proxy?

by: cranium2003Posted on 2005-09-28 at 06:11:20ID: 14974435

extremely sorry i am wrong. when i read that proxy does not apply to LAN setting i come to know that my connection does not require proxy address and its having direct connection.
for my other question, forget about internal proxy. what my ISP given me proxy address is different from the one identified by whatismyip.com so is there ant sort of subnetting and or my ISP proxy is router for accessing internet connection?

>  .. is there ant sort of subnetting and or my ISP proxy is router for accessing internet connection?
use traceroute (tracert.exe) to see which routes are used for connecting to the internet
