We have our own dedicated server at one of the popular managed hosting companies.
I have a very large website running in Joomla using PHP 5 / MYSQL 5. The database is about 40 MB.
What I would like to set up is a sort of mirror where the mirror is something like a day behind the live server.
So if anything really serious ever happens to the live site I can cut over to the other virtual server that has the database from the previous day. I would probably temporarily disable login and registration until we figured out what the problem is on the main site. Not sure if this is possible.
I have root access to the server with webmin.

It sounds like you are looking for a Replication Server:

Basically, your "main" server is your master server and receives its input from your applications. Your Replication server is your "slave" server which takes its input from your "main" server only. If main server software fails, you can always query the slave server for authentication or whatever, but you would not be able to accept registrations(for examlpe), until the main server is up and running. From your scripts view, the "slave" server is a read-only database. Typically, when you update your main server, it immediately contacts your replication server and inserts the new record on the replication server. If your main server is "completely dead" (beyond repair) you can of course later on restore the main server from the replication server if you wish. I believe you can even simply make the "slave" a main server and set up a different replication server for it. I'll leave that up to you, but long story short, you need a MySQL replication Server.
Forgot to mention that since you are using the same machine, the replication server will just need to use a different port. For the sake of clarity, when I said "If main server software fails", I meant the "main" MySQL server software. If the entire OS system fails, you will not even be able to use the replication server as a read-only db.
