I have a server that I use to host about 50 or so domains. I use plesk 8.3 (windows) to manage the server and about half of the domains use Dotnetnuke (4.8) for their sites (plesk for email). Currently, I have to manually change IIS settings to point to the c:\dotnetnuke\Website each time I create a new domain (for DNN) in plesk. The problem is this is laborious and everytime I upgrade or run repair utilities on plesk, it messed up virtual host locations and permissions. I have a lot of unused IP addresses, so each site could have unique IPs if that would help me. I want a way to use plesk to point new domains to my dnn installation (or another DNN installation location if necessary) without having to log in to the machine and manually change IIS settings.

Perfect... I sort of was putting this together in my head but I couldnt quite seal it. Thanks a bunch! Do you use plesk? I'm going to post a question about high availability with plesk, ie maybe having some kind of failover with dns or at least moving the SQL / mail server parts to another machine....
H, I have tried doing exactly this with my DNN installation with eukhost and it doesnt work. After days of discussions with their technical support - it would appear that the only way is to change the settings in IIS - which is far from acceptable! - I would love to hear from anyone who got the above solution working... For a start in the blog example given, the second site (or portal) isn't even a DNN site!! - Also while you can carry out step 1 by purchasing a dedicated IP - I have found no way to do step two (not that it is required by the example) 'Set this main domain to be the default domain for the the dedicated IP as well.' without purchasing SSL??? at least I can't see a way in plesk and tech support say thats impossible. Apparentyl without actually adding physical hosting in plesk, the IIS settings are not setup (even though the DNS settings of your additional sites point to your dedicated IP...!) all my additional domains simply pull a default plesk page and presently this has eukhost stumped. So any input from anyone who has actually achived this would be greatly helpful. If you need any further info just ask.

This is working for me with my hosting provider and I'm using plesk. I'm adding new portals to one DNN installation without a single IIS change and without any support request to my hosting administrator.
When you DO NOT configure a domain's physical storage in plesk IIS remains unchanged and that's exactly what you need because when a request hits the server the request will be forwarded to the "default domain" for that IP and therefore served by DNN if the portalalias matches.
For the step 2, you're right, you have to ask your hoster to associate your newly purchased IP to the domain. How do they do it? I really don't know in detail but when I asked my hosting provider to do it they did it in a matter of minutes. If they did it from Plesk or setting it up one in IIS I never knew and unfortunately never asked.
What's is imortant is that for that DNN installation I can add dozens of portals by myself without any intervention from my hoster.
IMHO, the question now can turn to "how exactly can a domain be assigned as the default destination to all requests made to a dedicated IP in plesk?"
once this is done, DNN works like a charm

Your right, the trick is to have a dedicated IP for each DNN installation.
1) Set your main DNN domain to use this IP.
2) Set this main domain to be the default domain for the the dedicated IP as well.
3) For each site that will be under this DNN installation, add a domain to plesk and configure the email if needed but do not configure the phisical storage. Set the same IP as the DNN installation.
you will be able to add new portals to DNN without a single IIS change
