How do I make sure deflate is working properly in Apache 2.2?

Asked by jeffpurcell in Web Servers

I'm running Apache 2.2 on FreeBSD 6.2 with PHP 5.something and MYSQL. I'm told by my php info file that gzip / deflate is installed and working properly, but how can I be sure it is working? Is there a way to test this? Also, I've installed a firefox plugin that gives me pointers on how to speed up my website load times. It informs me that my css and javascript files aren't being compressed. How can I tell apache (or php) to compress these files as well?
